  • The purpose of this presentation is to raise awareness on air pollution which causes many negative affects on the world as well as our community
  • Here we will discuss air pollution caused by cars
  • Please listen well as there will be a quiz at the end...and yes, there will be prizes ;-)

3.

  • The purpose ofus doing this is because we need to make our world a better place for our future generation .
  • UK is in the top 20 of most car usage (in the world!!!)
  • Citizens of other countries are suffering
  • The social, environmental and economic costs of climate change could be huge if no global action is taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • If we do not act now, it will be too late

WHY? 4. 5. 6. Skip GW animation 7. Greenhouse gas Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, Nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and dirty molecules are greenhouse gases 8. Earths Atmosphere the clouds and a natural layer of atmospheric gases take in and keeps a portion of the planets heat. This keeps our planet warm enough for life. SOMEenergy is reflected back in to space so earth is a bit cooler 9. The extragreenhouse gasesmade (e.g. Cars) prevent the suns energy from coming out so the earth remains warm. Greenhouse gas 10. 11. 12. 13. When a hurricane hit, it leaves a horrific mess. Buildings are destroyed which include schools, homes and work.A hurricane can kill you. 14. 15. Droughts lead to poor growth of crops, drying up of lakes and rivers etc. People and animals can die of hunger or thirst. Many children who come from poor areas of the world have to travel miles to get water. For this, they have to miss schooland education. Where does their future lie? Droughtscan cause suffering for many people, especially those who live in LEDCs 16. Floods are destroying peoples homes, schools, work , clean water etc. All of this is an important part of life . Without these, the future is filled with poverty. Animals are also being affected 17. There are millions animals who s habitat is the coral reef. If that dies out, they would eitherhave to look for and adapt to a new habitat or become extinct. Coral reefs are actually beneficial to humans. -Protects shorelines from damage caused by waves and storms -Provides sand to beaches in tropical areas -Source of food -Artificial bone replacement - REMOVES AND RECYCLES CO2-sources of anti-cancer drugs and other vital medicines -Supports diverse ecosystem -Source of many commercial products (e.g. Beauty products) 18. Antarctica is huge, and is covered in ice. If that ice melts, sea levels will rise which is what is happening due to global warming. The world is heating up,therefore the ice in Antarctica will melt.-if the ice in Antarctica melts, polar bears will lose their habitat -sea levels will also rise, which will cause land, near the sea to drown. -if land is drowned, people will lose their homes, schools, work etc.-migrating can lead to over population and a loss of a nation 19. 20. Global heat melts ice Greenhouse gas 21. 22. Most scientists agree that global warming presents the greatest threat to the environment. There is little doubt that the Earth is heating up.From the melting of the ice cap on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africas tallest peak, to the loss of coral reefs as oceans become warmer, the effects of global warming are often clear. However, the biggest danger, many experts warn, is that global warming will cause sea levels to rise dramatically. National Geographica study led by James Hansen, the head of the climate science program at the National Aeronautics and Space Administrations Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York and a professor at Columbia University, suggests that current estimates for how high the seas could rise are way off the mark and that in the next 100 years melting ice could sink cities in the United States to Bangladesh. Dr. Hansen 23. 24. 25. Respiratory diseases: BBC says it is the largest contributorto premature deaths. Cancer- Benzene from car exhausts is linked to leukaemia (type of cancer) Air pollution causes 1 in 50 heart attacks in LONDON! Can effect learning and memory negatively Anaemia- Shortage of blood cells Less ozonehigher risk of skin cancer 26. 27. 28.
