I teach… •  Adult Ed •  M.Ed •  Open Ed

My goal = learner-centered, inquiry-based adult learning

Not a new goal, or critique

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dewey#/media/File:John_Dewey_cph.3a51565.jpg

“The traditional model is teacher-centered rather than

learner-centered.

Knowledge and skills are commodities to be delivered

by the teacher to the student.”

- Dewey, Experience and

Education, 1938

But school often fails to allow for individual understandings.

My model = community of inquiry

Too often, online courses prioritize content / cognitive presence only

http://www.slideshare.net/SeanMichaelMorris/the-lms-as-portal-digital-pedagogy-labcairo

To establish presence,

do we need to be in the

same space? https://californiapixie.com/2013/05/10/old-school-fisher-price-style/

Presence = Humanity

To establish presence, we need to be able to communicate our experiences & understandings

https://www.flickr.com/photos/76345608@N00/3633789400

Not easy to do in an LMS

One-to-many communications

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/it/thumb/d/d8/Do_Not_Adjust_Your_Set.jpg/280px-Do_Not_Adjust_Your_Set.jpg

Many-to-many communications

https://www.flickr.com/photos/peppysis/6255473523/

Many-to-many is learner-centered

Many-to-many communications is the backbone of social media

NETWORKED PARTICIPATION

Contribution builds visibility & helps people find their people

https://www.flickr.com/photos/onion/148332611

And build personal/professional learning networks (PLNs)

BUT.

Students don’t necessarily want to use social media.

Especially students who are teachers.

Many-to-many is messy

20 / 60 / 20

CHOIR NEVER https://www.flickr.com/photos/nevilleslens/15867691904

Educators are conditioned to see tech as separate from – even

counter to – learning & presence

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-34174796 http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/22/opinion/sunday/the-flight-from-conversation.html?_r=0

Educators are encouraged – not unwisely – to be cautious

http://edutrendsonline.com/social-media-hazards-and-tips-for-teachers/

Thus online learning stays mostly confined to the LMS,

where it’s “safe”

https://www.flickr.com/photos/carolinandrea_pg/14575657747/

But where teacher authority & student compliance are already

baked in.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/39908901@N06/7028125619/

I wanted to try to break out of that.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/p_marione/11094032463/

In a learner-centered, inquiry-based way.

Networks in education are not new

But educators seldom have experiential

learning opportunities

for digital networked

participation… https://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashawk/5327432805

So I wanted to scaffold a proof of concept lesson using social media to connect & build presence. In the open, outside the LMS.

GOAL: Experiential, inclusive learning

I started with a #hashtag

#

Hashtags…

•  Collate all contributions with the same letter / number combo, no matter where

in the world they come from •  Operate as a rolling list of those

contributions, with newest at the top •  Allow ppl in different locations but with

similar interests to connect & to amplify each others’ contributions

I chose Twitter as the platform

(Lupton, 2014)

A # needs something to talk about in order to invite

participation: I chose an article with wide appeal & multiple

threads & layers.

A # also benefits

from built-in

critical mass to work as an experiential proof-of-concept

of networked participation.

My PLN at work – 4 teachers in 3 countries. 3 days.

So what happened?

People built presence

& conversations

People shared ideas

People shared practices

People shared stories

…and problems, lessons,

& solutions

People offered reflections from outside

I offered reflections on Twitter conventions

Learners offered very

positive evaluations…and

some of the 60% are still

using Twitter a year later.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pinprick/2452838770

Scaffolded networked participation supported learner-centered

inquiry.

Learners had an opportunity to build presence in a supportive professional community of practice.

…And to build literacies on a platform they can use for

ongoing, at-home professional development.

#ed1to1 = learner-centered, scaffolded participation

rather than tool- or teacher-centered use of technologies.
