1. TAKING THE FIRST STEP: BE EDUCATED

By reading this book, I believe you are a person who is committed in learning and personal

growth. Nothing happens unless first a dream. Goal setting is the first step behind every

success story. You may be told by other people about the importance of goal setting over and

over again. Don’t fall in the trap of “law of familiarity” by telling yourself or others, “I know it is

important” or “Don’t remind me again”. You know something but you are not doing it. It is just a

piece of useless information. The biggest stumbling block in people’s lives is inaction. Stop

making wishes, start visualising your goals and making them into reality. Let’s begin to open

your mind to new ideas & possibilities as well as starting to think of what really makes you

happy and fulfilled. You can also start by clarifying your life purpose and goals. Learn to ask the

right questions:

Do you want to earn $5,000 or more a month?

Do you hope to save $100,000 and invest it?

Are you unhappy with your current body shape? Want to lose 15kg in the next 3 months?

Or plan to gain more weight and grow your muscles?

Are you feeling lonely? Want to find your soulmate?

Do you aim to expand your network and meet high quality people?

Want to buy your dream home or car?

Do you wish to volunteer in your neighbourhood and serve the less privileged people?

Are you looking for personal growth? Want to learn a new language?

2. BE THE COMMITTED SHOOTER

Some of your wants’ may be your goals or targets.

Before we write them down, I want to share with you

about a shooting contest.

There are only 3 contestants: Ashley, Billy and Calvin.

In this contest, there are strange rules or conditions for

the contestants. The 1st shooter, Ashley, will be

blindfolded and the 2nd

shooter will just be a normal

person to throw the dart. The last shooter, Calvin, is given the privilege to walk to the dartboard

and place the dart at the bullseye. So who do you think will win the contest?

Ashley Billy Calvin

The answer is obvious. The winner will be Calvin. Why do I tell you about this shooting contest?

In life, there are 3 different types of people in this world about setting goals. The first type of

people is the “blind” man who has no goal in life and doesn’t care much in the daily activities

or work. He/she often just does what he/she is being told. The chance of success is absolutely

zero. The second type of people is the “Ok” man or the typical person who will set goal but

doesn’t care after that. He/she hopes to succeed and will leave it to God/parents/employers to

take care of them. The chance of success is between 50% and 60%. At least, this person knows

the directions that he/she is heading. The third type which is my favourite is the “eXcel-being”

who has clear goals and believes it is a MUST to succeed. He/she will do whatever it takes to

get his/her goals (as long as it is ethical and legal). The chance of success is almost 100%.

Although there are always things or events that we can’t control, we can choose how we respond

to them and change our approach to fit in the situation. We must be firm in our decisions but

flexible in our approach.

3. WHO NEVER FAILS BEFORE?

Are you afraid of failure? Do you know any successful people who

have not failed? Almost all successful people have failed one way

or another. Do you know how KFC started? Who created KFC?

The man is Colonel Sanders. He went to many restaurant owners

and told them, “I have a great chicken recipe and I think if you use it,

there’ll be more people coming to your restaurant to eat. I just get paid a % of your increase

profits/earnings.” Then almost every owner replied, “Are you crazy? Why must I use your

chicken recipe? I’ve my own.” Many rejected him. But did he stop? No. He went on and asked

1,009 owners before he heard his first “yes”. Isn’t it inspiring? Do you also know that Galileo

was sent to jail for 8 years because people thought he was insane and should be incarcerated for

claiming the earth revolved around the sun? Walt Disney originally created a character named

Oswald the Rabbit. When he went to his distributor to negotiate a better rate for the creation of

the character, he found out that he didn’t own the rights to the character, and that the distributor

did. Furthermore, that same distributor stole his employees right under him by offering them

better pay. After this major setback, he went on to create Mickey Mouse. Successful people treat

failure as feedback for them to improve. Similarly to Mr. Thomas Edison, he said, “I have not

failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

4. THE POWER OF WRITTEN GOAL

Gail Matthews, from Dominican University, had conducted a research on the impact of written

goals. She found a total of 267 participants from businesses, organizations, and business

networking groups. However, only 149 participants completed the study. The final participants

ranged in age from 23 to 72, with 37 males and 112 females. Participants came from the United

States, Belgium, England, India, Australia and Japan and included a variety of entrepreneurs,

educators, healthcare professionals, artists, attorneys, bankers, marketers, human services

providers, managers, vice presidents, directors of non-profits, etc.

Participants were randomly assigned to one of 5 conditions (groups):

Group 1 - Unwritten Goal

Group 2 - Written Goal

Group 3 - Written Goal & Action Commitments

Group 4 - Written Goal, Action Commitments to a Friend

Group 5 - Written Goal, Action Commitments & Progress Reports to a Friend.

Participants in Group 1 were simply asked to think about their goals (what they wanted to

accomplish over the next 4 weeks) and then asked to rate that goal on the following dimensions:

Difficulty, Importance, the extent to which they had the Skills & Resources to accomplish the

goal, their Commitment and Motivation to the goal, whether or not they had pursued this goal…
