What is Global Warming?

Since the mid 1800s our emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other heat trapping gases have increased.

These gases act like a blanket, trapping heat and warming the Earth’s surface.

The more of these gases we release the thicker the blanket becomes.

The Maldives are a chain of about 1,200 tiny islands located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India.

The total land area of the Maldives is about 300 square kilometres with a population of about 36,000 persons.

Most of the islands were created on coral reefs and lie just above sea level. The highest point is about 2.4 metres above sea level.

More than 80 percent of the islands are less than 1 metre above sea level.

The main economic activity is tourism based on the Maldives dry climate, clear seas and sandy beaches. Fishing is also an important industry.

1. The most serious effect of global warming would be rising sea levels. Some scientists think most of the country will be flooded by 2035.

2. Rising sea levels will increase beach erosion. There is evidence that the shapes of many of the islands have been changed by beach erosion.

3. An increase in the temperature of the sea water can lead to coral bleaching. When coral reefs are damaged and shrink in size the islands are more exposed to the erosive power of waves.

4. The fishing industry may also be affected. With a change in sea temperatures the fish stock may decrease as they migrate to other areas.

Threats from the sea in the Maldives9

In a marine flood in 1987, the islands’ president was swept out to sea in his car.

Three islands had to be evacuated in 2005 due to the risk of flooding.

The tsunami of December 2004 caused US$ 100 million in damage on 53 islands and killed 82 people.

The majority of the population on the island of Kandholhudhoo have volunteered to evacuate their homes over the next 15 years as strong tides are now flooding their homes.
