WHAT ARE FILM GENRE CONVENTIONS

Genre conventions are all the little parts of the genre such as character similarities and repeated plots that allow us to distinguish

between genres. Most genres have elements that the audience expects as they have been used many times in previous films from their

genre/sub genre.

PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER FILM CONVENTIONS

Shot• Fast paced

Typical Mise-En-Scene in Psychological Thriller:Location is a very important element of a thriller, in the majority of scene they are set in modern places & urban cities, the countryside is not often used as it could be confused with horror, which is an advantage for me as Dubai is the location where my film is being shot.

HOW I PLAN TO CREATE MEANING IN MY FILM WITH THE USE OF GENRE CONVENTIONS

• What conventions will we see in your film opening that will convey meaning to the audience over the genre of your film, the plot and the story line

HOW WILL MY CHOSEN LOCATIONS HELP TO CREATE MEANING FOR THE AUDIENCE• The two locations in my film opening are in the main city Dubai and a

stranded desert. Shooting in main Dubai links to my genre as it a normal location which provides realism.

• Shooting in the desert is also a place you wouldn’t usually think of which is why I think this location links to the genre as well, as it realistic as well as a very spontaneous idea for someone to shoot their film in.

• By shooting in these two locations it informs the audience on both why it would be enjoyable and unenjoyable to live in central city as well as to live somewhere where easy access to a remote, stranded desert is available.

• Dubai is a very strict living place and the terms and conditions are very hard to work around and breaking some rules should not be permitted as showing respect to this country is a number one quality. So figuring out whether I could actually film in central Dubai was allowed was hard to overcome however, I signed a contract with school which then gives me permission and a reason as to why I am filming a very popular public place.

USING RESEARCH TO HELP CREATE YOUR FILM

OPENING• By researching existing films of the same genre I was able to

narrow down my ideas on how to create my film opening whilst at the same time create meaning for the audience.

• For example in the TV series Seven their title sequence includes slow motion of close ups and wide shots with simple text appearing to inform the audience of the actors that are taking part. This gave me inspiration to do something similar with my title sequence as I want to follow the conventions of my genre of film.
