What have we gathered from some of our genre research and how will we show our chosen genre in our product?By Jack Archer, Alex Duckett and William Laufs

Initially…0We want our short-film documentary to have the correct

balance of entertainment and information/education not only so we may conform to the main conventions of a documentary, but also so that we can engage our audiences.

0Engaging our audiences may also be done by making the cinematography of our product interesting, keeping the audience entertained.

0 In terms the educational value of our documentary, this will be shown via the questions we ask the interviewees, and the answers they give.

Furthermore….0The article from the “Teaching Media and Television” book

explains how modern documentaries are now ‘dumbed down’, a term meaning that the content of the documentary becomes more understandable so that it appeals and is “more palatable” for a mass audience.

0As our target audiences are relatively niche, this is not a techniques that we intend to use and therefore we are less likely to include misleading or inaccurate facts and information that could be a problem, if we dumbed down our product.

In addition…0We have learnt about the term “Narrowcasting” which is the

process of targeting a particular audience through a form of media (such as television, radio trailers, posters etc.) that appeals to these audiences. This is a technique that we will need to use, as our target audiences are niche.

0As well as this, we have found out from our research that the demographic that is easiest to target advertisements for due to their high income and their adaptability to new/digital technologies are those within the 16- 34 demographic. Therefore, it might be beneficial to extend our secondary audience to people in their early 20’s so that we may cover more of this demographic than we do already.
