INTRODUCTION

For a long time educators have worked with the assumption that

there are subjects that are more appropriate for boys and

subjects that are better for girls This pre-supposition about

gender has caused a disparity in the way boys and girls are

taught and created false boundaries around gender-specific

career paths

Gender bias in education has made it difficult for girls to have

equal access to certain positions in the job market

G E N D ER - EQ UIT Y I S S U E S I N

K-12 EDUCATION PRACTICES amp ISSUES - DR PATRICIA FIORIELLO

INTRODUCTION

Today researchers are starting to realize that the data which

was usually interpreted to show that girls are less likely to

succeed in mathematics and science related endeavors is biased

because of unequal educational opportunities

This guide has been written to help point out the numerous

gender-related biases that are endemic in public school

education and to provide options to correct those issues

INTRODUCTION

There are many aspects that American schools should begin to

explore to eliminate gender bias These include

Teacherrsquos acknowledgement of the problem

Curriculum geared to include girls and boys

Text books that are not gender biased

Equitable funding for extracurricular activities

Single-gender classrooms

All children have the rightto equal educationalopportunities The presentsystem is by its very designlimiting possibilities forboth girls and boys

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

One of the main reasons that gender biases still exist is that

teachers arenrsquot either aware of the problem or they think they

are doing things to correct the problem whereas in reality they

are perpetuating it

This guide discusses issues like

Developing a fair system Feedback from girls

Academic expectationsGender identity model

PREFERRED CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK

Different students have different styles of learning Some

students are visual learners some are auditory learners while

still others need hands-on experiences to learn the same things

It is important that teachers recognize different learning styles

and adjust the curriculum according to the various learning styles

of the students in the classroom

This guide provides the basis of Preferred Curriculum Framework

SHOULD MY SCHOOL HAVE GENDER-SEPARATE CLASSES

One way to fix gender related issues in a classroom is to have

separate classes for girls and boys There are many pros and cons

to this kind of educational system

In this guide you will learn about

The pros of gender separate classes

The historical view

The cons of gender separate classes

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Another area of school life that tends to have gender-equity and

fairness issues involves extracurricular activities

Since the goal of extracurricular activities is to enhance

learning and socialization for all of the students only truly equal

access will allow girls to reap benefits the same way as boys

No person in the United States shall on the basis of sex be excludedfrom participation in or denied the benefits of or be subjected todiscrimination under any educational program or activity receivingfederal financial facility
