1) Research and planning phase

• Research information about your local area

• Research existing social enterprises and which local needs they address

• Identify a local social need that is not being met

• Describe a new or existing social enterprise that could meet the need you have identified

2) Writing up phase

You get 3 hours to:• Write up your final

report in controlled conditions

• The three hours may be split over a number of sessions

• There is extra time to print and assemble the report before you hand it in to your teacher

What happens after you hand in the report?

• There are no second chances or re-edits

• Work is then marked by your teacher

• Your reports are then standardised and moderated

Local Authority - defined

• Local government today has 375 councils in England and Wales

• It is run by elected councillors, over 18,000 of them!

• Some councils have Mayors

Children’s services• pre-school education • Schools • youth, adult and family and community education • children’s and families’ services – including welfare, fostering and adoption and child protection • youth centres • youth justice – secure accommodation and youth offender teams

Financial grants - defined

• An amount of money given by the government to fund certain projects. This may include; charity work, social enterprises or scientific research among others.

• A grant is not expected to be repaid, but may have a long application process

Social enterprises – as defined by AQA

• “a business that is engaged in activities that aim to tackle social problems, improve communities, people’s life chances, and meet the social needs of people within the community”

• Social enterprises can be seen as businesses that trade and make a financial surplus and that will re-invest a proportion of that surplus back into the business in order to achieve their stated goals.

• A group of people who are considered a unit because they live in the same area, such as a city, town, village or they share a set of common interests, social group or nationality
