Lesson Objectives
• To be able to understand the scenario as described by the AQA exam board
• To be able to use the term “Local Authority” with confidence
• To be able to identify the meaning of the term “grants”
• To be able to discuss the term “social enterprise” with confidence

Starter
• Have you ever wanted to make money and help people at the same time?
1) Research and planning phase
• Research information about your local area
• Research existing social enterprises and which local needs they address
• Identify a local social need that is not being met
• Describe a new or existing social enterprise that could meet the need you have identified
2) Writing up phase
You get 3 hours to:• Write up your final
report in controlled conditions
• The three hours may be split over a number of sessions
• There is extra time to print and assemble the report before you hand it in to your teacher
During this phase do you think your teach can give you feedback about your report?

What happens after you hand in the report?
• There are no second chances or re-edits
• Work is then marked by your teacher
• Your reports are then standardised and moderated
• This can take months so you may not get your grade for a while
• Your teacher cannot tell you your grade until work has been moderated by someone from AQA

• Your Local Authority is offering financial grants to social enterprises to encourage them to start businesses that address unmet needs in the local community which could be met by social enterprises.
• Lets start by defining some terms…
What do you think a Local Authority is?
Local Authority - defined
• Local government today has 375 councils in England and Wales
• It is run by elected councillors, over 18,000 of them!
• Some councils have Mayors
Examples of local authority services
Children’s services• pre-school education • Schools • youth, adult and family and community education • children’s and families’ services – including welfare, fostering and adoption and child protection • youth centres • youth justice – secure accommodation and youth offender teams
Housing• social housing • housing benefit and welfare services • homelessness

It may be a town council, city council, county council or parish council depending on where you live. Local
authority is another term for local council.

Financial grants - defined
• An amount of money given by the government to fund certain projects. This may include; charity work, social enterprises or scientific research among others.
• A grant is not expected to be repaid, but may have a long application process
What do you think a social enterprise is?
Social enterprises – as defined by AQA
• “a business that is engaged in activities that aim to tackle social problems, improve communities, people’s life chances, and meet the social needs of people within the community”
Definition continued
• Social enterprises can be seen as businesses that trade and make a financial surplus and that will re-invest a proportion of that surplus back into the business in order to achieve their stated goals.

Local community - defined
• A group of people who are considered a unit because they live in the same area, such as a city, town, village or they share a set of common interests, social group or nationality

• Your report will need to have sections, a front cover and a series of appendices

• Local authority; A group of people who govern an area e.g. Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council
• Grant; a financial award of money that is not expected to be repaid
• Community; a unit of people who share locality, interests or social groups
• Social enterprise; a business which trades with the intention of helping a need in the local community
