From The Director: Ron Cox

The theme or focus for the Garden, as we complete our sixth year, has been Learn.Play.Grow at the Botani-cal Garden of the Ozarks. This focus highlights the mission of the Botanical Garden. One of the main missions of the Garden is to provide educa-tion. Thanks to our many excellent volunteers, the Garden provides nature education opportunities to over 10,000 children throughout the year and adult classes in the winter and early spring. Numerous events, like free concerts, are offered throughout the year for enjoyment of the community. With its beautiful grounds, the Garden is a unique recreational venue. Our plant life and whimsical garden features can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. The

nine themed gardens offer a demon-stration of plants which can be grown in the Northwest Arkansas region. New features continue to be added to the Garden each year. For example, among the most recent ad-ditions are the Yates Boardwalk over the wa-ter containment basin in the Rock and Water Garden and the Nature Education Cottage in the Children’s Gar-den. The Klingaman Arboretum, located south of Hilton creek in the meadow area, continues to grow and expand. The Garden’s Board of Directors is working on the plans for a Nature Education Building to be located at the far west end of the

the Terrace. Visitors will get to sample delicious food from the new caterer, Early Bird Catering, cake from a local bakery and see different ideas from invitations to flowers. Intents Party Rental will have several of their new items on display. Other top vendors

from Northwest Ar-kansas will be involved. The event is FREE. Dates are booking fast, so schedule your tour soon. TOURS ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. The Reception will be held January 6th- 18th 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. After hour tours may be sched-uled.

2014 Bridal Reception Date: January 6th – 18thTime: 8:30 am – 5:00 pm By Appointment OnlyThe Garden is a unique place for your wedding, reception or rehearsal dinner. The Garden was recently voted “Best Place to Get Married ” by CitiScapes magazine for the fifth year. Tour the gardens for your special occasion to be booked at the Garden. Leading wedding planner, Claudia Slezak will transform the Event Hall and Terrace to display the newest spring, fall, sum-mer and winter table themes. A faux wedding ceremony will be set up on

meadow. The support of BGO’s mem-bers and donors enables the Garden to showcase the beauty of nature and provide educational opportunities.

This support is greatly appreciated and we hope it will continue as the BGO plans for growth.

you have a special passion such as rock gardening, tree care, propagation, or something else, come talk to us. Another group of supporters are the tradesmen who support our work by providing in-kind donations of goods and services that help us stretch our limited resources to the max. Local nurseryman and tree lover Russell

Black at Westwood Gardens helped immeasurably in our first major ar-boretum planting last spring. Mary Ann King of Pine Ridge Gardens in London, AR, Frank Sharum at Sharum’s Garden Center, Trey Mor-rison at White River Nursery, the folks at Bradford’s Nursery in Rogers and staff members at Home Depot and Lowes have also helped provide plants and supplies either free or at deep discounts. Daryl Revelle has done our irrigation work since incep-tion and I really appreciate how he and Corey Scates at Keeling Irrigation have worked with us to keep the garden green and growing through the tough startup years. Likewise, Phil Talbert and his technicians at Spring-Green have done a great job of keeping our zoysia lawn looking its best. Ron Troutman and his Boulder Construc-tion crews have also done yeomen’s work by installing many of our new concrete walkways for just the cost of materials. Without all this help our growth would have been much slower. Much thanks to all that has been given over the years to make the BGO a real-ity.

Gerald KlingamanOperations Director

Volunteers Make it Happen

My, how big you’ve grown. Like most of us, I’ve made that comment to the grandchildren on numerous occasions and – because of my special interest – to various trees I’ve planted. Growth is an organic process that takes input of various kinds of resources, a bit of tender, loving care and time. We tend to be an impatient species who wants things to be done yesterday, but growth just can’t be rushed. It happens at its own pace. We’re growing here at the BGO and that growth is a direct result of the various kinds of resources you, our members and friends, have committed to nurturing this growth. Each year since we opened six years ago we have grown in the number of garden visitors strolling our pathways, the number of children visiting and learning about nature through interaction with our gardens, and the number of Northwest Arkansas supporters who are aware of the beauty and inspiration we are bringing to the region. Each year we’ve also grown physically with more gar-dens, outstanding features such as the butterfly house, longer garden paths to explore and the new arboretum plant-ing on the south side of the creek that will be living infrastructure for future development that will begin in the not too distant future.

This growth could not have happened without the support of our members and friends. In addition to the all important financial support, we also are beneficiaries of the sweat off your

brow. Without our volunteers, the BGO couldn’t survive. In our last reporting year 217 volunteers put in 7,904 hours worth an estimated $227,809 helping the garden grow. Many of our volunteers – office, educa-tion, events and garden workers – are Master Gardeners who have chosen the BGO as their sanctioned project where they earn their service hours every year. The front desk volunteers and tour guides provide an invaluable service as they greet guests, answer the phone and generally provide the friendly public face for the garden.Judy Smith has a cadre of educational volunteers that help out with all of the children’s educational events and bring their passion and enthusiasm to the fore each time an event occurs. Liz Esch’s community of dependable and ever enthusiastic volunteers show up for each major event, assisting with set up, admissions, food and beverage service, and clean up. Susan Jenkins is our resident dumpster diver who gives us her special hard look whenever we try to take a shortcut and not follow her recycling guidelines. Little Sprouts – our fun and heartwarming program for preschool age children – couldn’t happen without the volunteers that help Dani Dingman pull it off. Out in the garden itself we have our regular Wednesday garden crew that help Susan Regan and Lissa Morrison with the various tasks that keep the garden beautiful throughout the year. The butterfly house has undergone a metamorphosis as it has hatched its own group of volunteers – the Butter-fly Nannies – to tend to theif special-ized needs . Other specialized volun-teer crews have developed that work in the natives garden, maintaining the water gardens and our indefatigable mowing crew. I’ve had my own volun-teers – for example Charles Richardson who has shown up on Wednesdays for years – and a long list of student interns and others who want to help out and get some behind the scenes experience working in a public garden. There are many ways to volunteer, so if

Education Focus @BGO Chefs In the Garden

This year’s event was the best one yet! The chefs were so creative, offering Blue Crab Stuffed Button Mushrooms, Garden Primavera: Tri-Colored Penne Tossed with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Grilled Chicken and a Medley of Gar-den Vegetables, Shrimp & Grits Ital-iano and Crème Brulee Tartlets. Glazer Distributors provided a broad selec-tion of wines and beer, with Skinny Girl Cosmopolitans as the signature cocktail! Café Rue Orleans won “2013 Most Popular Restaurant” at Chefs in the Garden. The setting, food, drinks, music, photobooth and so much more made the event memorable to the guests that came from Northwest Arkansas, Little Rock and Fort Smith. The Garden would like to thank our Honorary Chair, Kelly Zega, for being so supportive of our growth, education and events. The Garden would also like to thank Filippo Berio for being the presenting sponsor, and Coca-Cola, Glazer’s, Intents Party Rental, Metropolitan National Bank, Cole Fennel Photography, Dancenhance Entertainment, Events Interior Fabrics and Design and Pigmint for being the sponsors. Another thank you to the Presenting Media Sponsor: Citiscapes, 3W, AY, Celebrate, Warm 94.9, US 94, 1030 KFAY-AM and Power 105.7. We appreciate our dedicated chefs from Café Rue Orleans, Early Bird Catering, Fayetteville Country Club, GC Cater-ing, Greenhouse Grille, Meridienne Dessert Salon, Mermaids, Starbuck’s, The Hive@21c, Vetro 1925 and Yar-nell’s Ice Cream, for making such spec-tacular food for the event. We are cur-rently looking for Sponsors and Chefs for the 2014 Chefs in the Garden.

Education is one of the major missions of the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. Children’s Education Programs at the BGO remain the focus with such major activities as Earth Day, Little Sprouts preschool day programs, Explore@BGO summer day camp, and Butterfly Days elementary school education. These programs and others continue to grow at the Garden. In 2012, the Garden provided an outdoor classroom for over 7,500 children. In 2013 through September, the Gar-den has provided an outdoor nature classroom for 9,890 children. Another 650 are scheduled in October and November. Statistics provided by the American Public Garden Association indicate that a garden the size of the BGO would normally serve a popula-tion of 3,400 school children during a year. The BGO serves many more than other similar botanical gardens thanks to our dedicated volunteers and educa-tion sponsors such as Tyson Foods, Cox Communications, the Schmieding Foundation and P&G. The volunteers and garden staff work to insure the quality of the programs offered im-proves even as the number of children

participating increases.

The education sponsors are important to the Garden because they help un-derwrite a portion of the cost of pro-viding the education programs. The Botanical Garden has, for a number of years, spent more on its education programs than it receives in revenue to cover these programs. In 2012, the Garden received $20,567 in educa-tion program support and $20,480 in education grants, but had education expenses totaling $65,686. For some of the education programs such But-terfly Days and Earth Day, the Garden receives a payment of $4.00 per child per day. However, the overall cost per day per child at the BGO is just under $7.00. This cost per day is well under the national average which generally exceeds $10.00 per child per day.

The BGO manages its resources and makes good use of the funds donated by its supporters. The Children’s Edu-cation Programs at the Garden will re-main a focus and continue to increase in the numbers served and to improve in the quality of the programs offered.
