Page 22: Fulmer Facilities Plan

Facility Use

• The Deer Chase Elementary media center operates on an “open and flexible” schedule.

• Small groups or individuals may come to the media center anytime during the school day.

• The media center is open each school day from 8:15 – 4:15 for students and staff.

• Each student has their own library pass with their barcode for check-out.

• Students who wish to do research or use the internet must have a pass from their teacher with the topic of research noted.

• Pre-Kindergarten through First Grade classes may sign up for story time, and the teacher must remain with his/her class.

Page 23: Fulmer Facilities Plan

Facility Use• An open class format is provided for

teachers to have an entire class come to the library for a definite purpose such as research, technology, and or story time.

• Teachers are encouraged to collaborate with the media specialist to provide specific instructional activities.

• Planning for whole class instructional visits should be arranged a week in advance.

• Teachers may check out materials for a period of one month with the exception of curriculum materials which can be checked out for the entire school year.

• Students in Kindergarten and First Grade may check out one book for a period of one week, and only first graders may take them home.

Page 26: Fulmer Facilities Plan

Recommended Facility Use Changes• Teachers should be required to

check out books and other materials for two weeks, as to ensure the availability of resources to other teachers, and students.

• Teachers and the media specialist should work together to create a reserved section of resources and books for teachers to check out for a current unit of study.

• Confidentiality statement ensuring that all records of items checked-out are private and used only for the purpose of record keeping.

• Monthly meetings for the purpose of collaborative planning will be held in order to ensure that the library media center is used to its full potential.

Explanation of Remodeled Media Center

• First, I would remove the circular tables and replace them with rectangular ones in order to maximize space, and decrease the amount of socializing.

• These tables would include chairs that have comfortable seating. Therefore, all of the chairs from the existing media center will be replaced

• These new tables and chairs will also be repositioned as to ensure that multiple classes do not intermingle.

• There will also be an additional table “Reserved for Teachers”

Page 29: Fulmer Facilities Plan
