Transitioning to AgilePM – Lessons Learned

1. It is not a simple switch from PRINCE2 to AgilePM so become an expert, get educated and really understand AgilePM before you begin the transition.

2. There are different pressures, different priorities and a change of pace managing an agile project compared to a PRINCE2 project.

3. Don’t throw everything away, the two approaches can be combined to create something that is greater than the sum of their parts.

1. AgilePM is not a methodology, it’s a philosophy so it requires deep understanding of how it works to get the best out of it.

2. Switching to AgilePM involves changes roles and responsibilities so requires some organisational redesign.

3. AgilePM changes the expectations of what is delivered, when and how so research the impact on your business and identify why agile is better.

Don’t throw your waterfall method away:•Alienating those on the periphery of project management•Losing the progress we have made in sponsorship and governanceChange the emphasis:•Keep your existing structure – terminology, documentation, routines•Replace the contents – Project Plan becomes Delivery Plan and Deployment Plan; Requirements become Prioritised Requirements List; Models replace presentations; Testing is early and frequent
