WP3 Objectives1. Provide the technical means for the delivery of validated
training content supplied by WP2.
2. Establish a state-of-the-art e-learning platform – the FOSTER portal – populated with Open Access training content, providing an essential bridge between WP2 and WP4.
3. Tailor the content delivery to the specific training needs of all key target audiences addressed by the project, including academic staff, institutions (administrators, librarians), research project managers, and policy-makers and staff working in funding bodies.
5/34
WP3 Objectives
… deliver the content on Open Science through online channels in an interactive, engaging and educationally suitable way …
6/34

Tasks overview
10/34
Task 3.1 – Requirements Analysis & System Architecture
a) Technical requirements analysis & use casesb) System architecture and user interfaces - Develop the system
architecture and designc) Technical roadmap with timescales
Output: D3.1 - Requirements analysis & system architecture
Duration: M1-M3 Leader: OU Contributors: TUDelft, UMinho
11/34
Task 3.1 – What to expect?- Shortest, but perhaps the most important WP3 task- Requiremenst gathering (starts with a survey)- Identify use cases & user roles- Documents circulated to the consortium (shared on Google
docs and relevant sections available for comments)- A set of virtual meetings (suggestion bi-weekly) with the
consortium
- Additionally, take into account the the type and quantity of training content (result of Task 2.1) and decide on a conceptually suitable approach for the realisation of the FOSTER portal
- Decide on the technology (Drupal, Moodle, OpenLearn Works, edX, etc)
12/34
Task 3.2 – The FOSTER portala) Deployment of the technical infrastructure for content inclusion b) Technical provision for content upload and sharingc) Content enrichment toolsd) Adaption and development of the Learning Toolkite) The integration of the Learning Toolkit and the improvement of the user interfaces
Output: D3.2 – The FOSTER portal
Duration: M1-M12 Leader: OU Contributors: TUDelft
13/34
Task 3.2 – What to expect? (1/2)• The FOSTER portal should become the central reference place
for the delivery of the OA training content (online, in the classroom as well as at the training events)
• The portal available at M12• Ideally basic facilities for content upload available at the end of
M6 (no promise)
• Agile development process
14/34
Task 3.2 – What to expect? (2/2)• The various tools on the portal can only be truly useful if:
a) we have high quality content and/or high quantity of content & b) we manage to draw a critical mass of users to the portal through the training events (WP4) and beyond
• We will need active communication with WP2 & WP4 regarding the upload, structuring, presentation, quality, administration, … of content on the FOSTER portal throughout the whole project
15/34
Task 3.3 – The FOSTER back-office toolkitProvide a set of tools to enhance the portal administration and user experience by back-office tools for:a) user registrationb) content maintenance and validationc) general portal administration
Output: D3.3 – The FOSTER back-office toolkit
Duration: M12-M23 Leader: OU Contributors: TUDelft
16/34
Task 3.3 – What to expect?• Can only be effectively developed if there is a suitable (and
hopefully sustainable) model for the operation of the portal beyond the duration of the FOSTER project
• Necessary to understand in detail the daily operational processes and user responsibilities
17/34
Task 3.4 – Content upload, delivery process & FOSTER testing
a) The content upload and harvestingb) The FOSTER portal test & optimisation
Output: D3.4 – Report on content upload & harvesting, delivery process and testing
Duration: M7-M23 Leader: TUDelft Contributors: OU
18/34
Task 3.4 – What to expect?• Day to day support and communication with WP2 and content
providers• Technologically facilitate blended learning, self-learning• Field testing of the FOSTER portal• Community involvement
19/34
Task 3.5 – Technical sustainability and maintenance plan
a) Develop technical sustainability and maintenance planb) Explore potential synergies with other related initiatives
Output: D3.5 – Technical sustainability & maintenance plan, future delivery opportunities
Duration: M19-M24 Leader: TUDelft Contributors: OU
20/34
Task 3.5 – What to expect?• Open Course/MOOCs opportunities assesment
• Technical sustainability and maintenance plan – will require input from the consortium
Duration: M19-M24 Leader: TUDelft Contributors: OU

22/34
Opportunities• Become the Open Science reference portal• Serve all stakeholders involved in the research process• Deliver Open Courses (and even a MOOC) on Open Science• High visibility of training content through multiple-channel
learning: iTunesU, OpenLearn, edX,OpenCourseWare, eBooks, Futurelearn, etc
• Making a subset of content on the FOSTER portal part of the official curriculum
• Providing certification for Open Science• Contributing to the positive changes in researchers behaviour
and the way research is being done
23/34
Example – OpenLearn
• content structure/organisation
• interactive features
• Open Course
25/34
Example – Eurogene (2/2)
• Navigation to learning packages
• Content recommendation
26/34
Example – OpenCourseWare – TU Delft
• Video quality• Open Courses
28/34
Example – edX – TU Delft
• MOOC
29/34
Example – iTunesU
• Distributing videos
30/34
Example – eBooks
• Interactive books
31/34
Risks
TRAINING CONTENT!!!
SUSTAINABILITY!!!
32/34
Risks (1/2)• Where are we going to get the content from?• Who will be putting the content on the FOSTER portal?• What if the content is not of sufficient quality?• Who will ensure we have rights to put external content on the
FOSTER portal?• What are the incentives for putting content on the FOSTER
portal?• How are we going to use the materials on the FOSTER portal
during training events?• Who will improve the training content if it is not sufficiently
engaging/interactive?
33/34
Risks (2/2)• How is content going to be classified and structured?• Who will design educationally suitable learning pathways?• What are we going to do if we do not have training content to
support all key stakeholders? • How are we going to get the critical mass of users on the portal?• Who is going to author interactive material, such as quizzes or
HTML5? • How will the portal operate beyond the project lifetime (who will
pay)?
34/34
Suggestions• Vision is key, but focus on the immediate next actions• Detailed and realistic plan• Treat resolving of the main risks as a priority (content,
sustainability, community)• Engagement and alignment of work across WPs is key to success
