Inhaler by Foals is a indie/rock song and is a very upbeat song. The vocals

have an aggressive sound in the chorus which emphasizes the meaning of the

song.

The song is about conflict and the singer being smothered to the point where

he’s not able to breath hence the song title ‘Inhaler’. This shows he needs an

inhaler to breathe or space from everything as the lyrics is “I can’t get enough

space.”

The song starts off with people on the floor with exaggerated shots of them

breathing heavily which gives the audience the idea of what the song is about

and the theme of the song. It also shows the location to be in an abandoned

building which is symbolic as the small space could represent the singers life.

As the song is about not having enough space to breathe, it links with the

narrative as the shot shows them in a wide space. The lighting in this scene

is dull which could connote depression and being in a dark place.

Throughout the music video, there are shots of a man doing graffiti on the wall

in skate park which is a common convention of modern Indie/rock videos. This

lets the audience know it is an Indie song.

There is also a high angle wide shot of the band playing in the bowl of the skate

park which represents skateboarding. They have chosen this location to perform

in as it connect with the song as they are in the center of the bowl which

emphasizes needing breathing space instead of being closed in.

The music video also shows scenes of a woman with tattoo of lungs on her chest

(emphasizes needing to be able to breathe.) After this shot, the woman is shown

to be breathing heaving.

As the song has a fast paced beat, the editing style is fast to keep up

with the rhythm. The fast paced shots of the locations in the video

establish the setting, narrative and style of the video which is modern

indie/rock and has no other common conventions of this style such as

black/white or a retro color effect.

Mid shots of the band members are shown throughout the video whilst

they’re playing their instruments which shows performance and

performance is a common convention of rock videos.

The image of the band shows indie clothing which relates to the genre

and shows their appearance is stereotypically indie. The clothing they’re

wearing are skinny jeans, vintage jacket and casual shirts which doesn’t

attract much attention and they look more casual.
