In the US, ad blocking grew 48 percent between

2014 to 2015

198 consumers globally are

now blocking ads

Surveys claim that young internet

users have already decided they hate

online ads (Rosenwald, 2015)

(Rosenwald, 2015)

(Rosenwald, 2015)

1- Ads are annoying and intrusive (64%) 2- Ads are disruptive (54%) 3- Ads create security concerns (39%) 4- Ads affect load time and bandwidth usage (36%)

When asked why they install ad blockers, users

indicated that it’s because:

Third-party data gathering:

In the eyes of browsers, the ubiquity of third-party trackers further justifies their need for

ad-blockers (Emerging Technology from

MALWARE

“Many ads are actually in

questionable ethical territory because

they harass users and in some cases—such as a recent high-profile incident involving Yahoo — infect computers with

malware”

Ethical obligation to install ad-blockers?

Michael Rosenwald claims that ad blocking spreads through word-of-mouth

communication, whereby “one person discovers the

blissful web, then tells everyone they know”; however, “if ad blocking

continues to grow in popularity…it could threaten the financial underpinnings

of much of the web”

“The doomsday scenario for publishers is that ad

blocking becomes easier, more well known and

regularly used” (Davies, 2016)

If ad blocking rates maintain their current levels, publishers are estimated to lose $35

billion by 2020 (Davies, 2016)

HOW PUBLISHERS ARE FIGHTING BACK!

1-Using technology that helps them get around extensions by

re-inserting ads 2-Paying to be part of a whitelist

of websites maintained by ad blocking organizations

3-Experimenting with ways to get visitors to pay for their content

(i.e., subscriptions, micropayments, or one-time

donations)Image Source: “Sure! We’ll finish the job”, by World War I and World War II Propaganda Posters Collection, Brandeis University, https://

Blocking the blockers

Publishers may chose one of two options:

(1) To bypass ad-blockers, displaying ads anyway

(2) To display a message notifying browsers that the use of ad-blockers causes the

site to lose money and offering a subscription plan or letting browsers’

customize their ad experience

Subscription

If programmers fail to make profits, they may have to

appeal to visitors using ad blockers to pay for a

subscription so that content can be maintained

However, research suggests that most people are still not

prepared to pay for premium, advertising-free content

Publisher’s are also implementing native advertising…

("the definition of native advertising", 2017)

Some native ads trick consumers into viewing

content by failing to provide source

disclosure to consumers

The advertiser thereby signals a desire to take

advantage of consumers’ naivety and higher levels of trust in

editorial content

Image Source: “Look To Your Right”, by Jeff Gates, https://www.flickr.com/photos/outtacontext/4805053290/in/photolist-8jB9Wo (Colin Campbell, & Lawrence J. Marks, 2015)

Ad blockers

Create unobtrusive and

high quality ads

Ben Wood global president, iProspect,

argues that “ad-blockers aren't really the problem - they are a symptom of poorly executed and poorly

managed digital campaigns…if

advertisers evolve and learn to add value,

consumers won't need or want to block ads”
