You’re ready to begin preparing for the SAT and so you begin looking for SAT prep books. All of a sudden you realize that there are many such books to choose from. How do you choose from so many?

I am going to focus on math here since that is the area in which I have the most expertise. But most of what I describe here can be applied to other educational books.

So let’s talk about finding the best SAT math prep book or books.

First of all, anyone that is preparing for the SAT should have a copy of the College Board’s “Official SAT Study Guide,” ideally the second edition. This book can be used as your primary source for SAT preparation, but there is a fundamental problem with relying on this book alone. There are no solutions to the problems in the book itself, and the solutions that are available from the College Board, although correct, are often too straightforward, time consuming, and difficult to reproduce for many students.

If you really want to use College Board questions alone, then I recommend supplementing the Official Study Guide with a solution guide written by a separate author. It is however in your best interest to have at least one additional SAT math book that teaches SAT specific strategies and has a nice selection of practice problems. Make sure you check the credentials of the authors of any book you plan to use before making a purchase. A little extra time researching the writers of the material you will be using for the next few months may save you a lot of time and energy in the long run.
