After months and months of complaining about what is served for dinner every night your mom has assigned you the task of planning the families dinners for 5 nights, how great is that? You can choose whatever you want to have for dinner and your mom will cook it for you! But, there’s a catch, you must stick to the family’s weekly budget. This means that all the ingredients that go into each meal must be bought with only a certain amount of money. It is up to you to determine what will be for dinner each night and what type of meals work best within a your particular budget.

Your job is to develop a weekly meal plan for your family of four based on your families weekly dinner budget of $75. You will come up with and research several different meal options and then find the combination of choices that best fits into your budget. Your final task will be to present your finalized meal plan and explain the process you went through to come to your decision. Also, at the end of this process you should be able to identify effective ways of sticking to a budget, and explain ways in which consumers can save money on everyday expenses.

1. Divide your team into three groups; the dinner planners, the side dish planners, and the dessert planners. Each group will be responsible for coming up with 3 possible options for each of the 5 days of the week, and also prices for the ingredients involved. Click on your job title to see details about your assignment.

2. Bring your team back together to review your results. You will begin putting together possible menus for each day and checking to see if each menu fits into your budget.

3. Lastly, you will design a powerpoint presentation to show the class your findings.

General information before you start shopping….

• Your family is made up of four people, including yourself, so all of your recipes should serve four. If your recipe feeds more than 4 you can keep it the same, but if your recipe feeds less than 4 you will need to add to it. You can find out how to do that at this website…

• If a recipe calls for a portion of an item, such as 1 cup of bread crumbs from a 2 cup package, you must buy the while package of the item, but if that item is used in another recipe you can use your leftovers, as long as there is enough left.

• You have checked your mom’s current kitchen inventory and you find that she already has many common cooking ingredients, check this list before you shop. If you already have the item include it when you write the recipe, but under the price column write $0.

Mom’s Pantry Items

• On this grocery website produce (fresh fruit and vegetables) is sold in larger quantities, if you do not need that much of the product you can find the number of ounces you need and use the price per ounce provided to find the price for the amount you need. If you need to convert certain ingredient amounts you can use this link, http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/cooking. When using this site you will have to choose the type of ingredient you are measuring, if your ingredient is not listed choose one that is close to the same size and consistency.

Group Collaboration…

• As you come back together with your group share the options that you have come up with for your part of the meal. As a group start to think about the possible combinations you could put together for dinner each night.

• Print off the working meal plan sheets and develop 4 possible meal plans for the week, with prices. Your total price for the whole week should be in the yellow box.

• Look at the totals for each week and determine which meal plans do or do not fit into your budget. Pick one meal plan that works with your budget and one meal plan that does not to review as a group.

• Look at the meal plan that did not fit into your budget, why is that? Look at the ingredients involved in each meal plan and try to determine what items could have contributed to putting you over budget. Is there a way that you could lower the cost of certain meals by substituting ingredients?

• Break down your final meal plan into types of food (meat, pasta, sauces, produce…) look at the prices of each group and start to think about which group contributes the most to your overall cost of the meal. Organize your information into a table showing all the ingredients listed by type and final prices for each food group.

Final Assignment You and your group will create a powerpoint presentation that

summarizes your work. In your powerpoint include

1. a summary of the assignment2. what factors contribute to making a budget work or not work, what

factors determine what a families budget will be?3. your final meal plan4. break down of your meal plan into types of food (with prices)5. an explanation of which food groups contribute the most to the price

of your meals6. an overall summary of how family budgets work and what you found

to be the most effective strategies for shopping on a budget.

- You can organize your powerpoint however you want, just be sure to include all of the needed information. Be sure to include interesting graphics to make the presentation appealing, you will be showing your presentations to the class.

At the end of the process you will turn in each recipe collection and your working meal plans. You will also present you powerpoint to the class. Your overall project will be graded based on your presentation to the class, using the webquest rubric.

By completing this webquest you have been able to see how individual components needed in a household fit into a specific budget. You have been able to plan out a meal for a family of four for an entire week and you have been able to gather experience and understanding about how a household budget works effectively.

This webquest provides children with an interactive way to learn about money and how families budget their money. Children are able to put themselves into an adult role and learn new things about that role that they probably never realized before. Children will enjoy the feelings of independence they get by being able to make their own choices, but they will also be able to see what stipulations come with the freedom to make those choices.
