Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997)

• Pop Artist in the 1960’s• Pop Art: an art movement that originated in the 1950’s in

England, spreading to the United States in the 1960’s, and was based on “popular culture”

• Some major artists during the Pop Art movement include: Andy Warhol, Richard Hamilton, Jasper Johns, and Roy Lichtenstein.

• Lichtenstein, a very educated artist, found his start in painting Pop Art images after a challenge from his children. They bet that he couldn’t paint as well as the comic strips they read.

Roy’s Style

• Used different size Benday Dots to create shading. By spacing them differently, he created different colors and shadows.

• Painted images that already existed, often comic book pictures or common objects.

• Objects are large, filling the whole canvas.• Used simple brushstrokes to demonstrate extreme

emotion. • Wanted his paintings to seem machine-made with no

visible brushstrokes.

• Used primary colors (red, blue, yellow) to create the whole image.

• Usually outlined everything in thick, black lines.

• Used oil or Magna paint (it’s a brand).

Choosing an Image

• Many of Roy’s images came from actual comic books. I looked through my brother’s and found this image in a Green Arrow comic.

The Process

• My dad works at the nearby middle school, and they have a device called Elmo.

The Process


Elmo is essentially a live camera that, by using a projector, puts the object placed beneath it on the SmartBoard.

I balanced the canvas until it was the correct height for the projector.

Tracing the image in the dark proved to be easier because the lines showed up better.

The paints that Lichtenstein used were Magna paints.

Magna, the brand, is under a new company now. They are now Golden Paints.

A Learning Experience

• This project gave me a new respect for Roy’s work. His bold colors, black lines, and extremely precise Benday Dots helped intensify the common images he created. I love his work, and never in a million years could I create a painting as precise and impressive as his. Yet, the experience was fun and I enjoyed getting to use his techniques. I’m quite proud of my rendition of Roy!
