Where do you most see or hear about films being that are being released? I asked this questions in my survey to

see how significant my preliminary tasks are and whether there are extra ways to get the film trailer, once made, viewed. From my survey it shows that TV is the place people most frequently see films being advertised. On TV it is most common to see the trailer of the film.Social Media is the second most popular place, which is easy for myself and Scarlet to use in order to make more people aware of the trailer as we are both users of social media and able to get it shared. YouTube included in this.

What do you most use to watch films?

This question clearly shows that if in the industry where we should release our film. From the survey it shows that 19 out of 22 people answering watch films on Netfilx, Sky AnyTime and LoveFilm. This is only become more popular in the recent past due to the accessibility of these sites. So not only when realising our film into the real world would we look at releasing it into the cinemas but once on DVD release possibly Netflix as well. Netflix is likely to beneficial to us as it often shows films of the indie/romance genre as well as newly released blockbusters.

What is your favourite film genre?

From this question we can see that action, comedy and romance are most popular with the people answering the survey, with rom-com, drama, sci-fi and adventure close behind. This is good for our film as Romance is one of the highest choices with drama also being popular as these are the main genres in our film. However, although not in the trailer in the real film there would also be elements of humour to lighten areas of the film to contrast with the sadder areas.

Do you like Drama/Romance films?

Fortunately the majority of the people who answered the survey said they did like watching romance and drama films, with some also saying they sometimes do. Although we have know way of knowing for sure, it is likely that as the survey was mainly answered by females that the few males who did answer are more likely to have been them who said they don’t like or sometimes like romances. However it could be that some women also aren’t interested. However, fortunately 20 out of 24 like or at least sometimes like watching the genre of the film we are planning to make.

Who would you watch Drama/Romance films with? This question was asked to understand a

little bit more about what sort of tone we should make the film, whether it should be a film you can watch with your dad as well as a film you can watch with your boyfriend or whether it didn’t matter because people tended not to watch it with a certain person, meaning we could eliminate trying to fit that tone as well as many others. From the survey most people tended to watch it with their friends, which I think is really good as we can be a lot more creative with that as there are many things people are willing to watch while maybe not so much with other people like your parents. I do believe that this means we should try and make it a feel good film or something that has lots of feel good moments despite the sadder topic. Something such as Fault In Our Stars, which isn’t a ‘feel good’ movie but there are feel good moments and happy tears as well as sad.

What do you think is key to making a good film trailer?

This is to see what elements are most important to viewers and what we need to make as some of our bigger priorities. From the survey it shows that we really need to make sure we get a good soundtrack for the trailer, something that will stick in your head. We also need to make sure that viewers get a clear sense of the storyline so they aren’t confused but rather want to know more and want to watch out film. From the survey it appears that a voiceover and typography are less important to the viewers, which I could have predicted as people are less aware of the importance, however if there was lots of pink flamboyant writing for a horror movie it wouldn’t make sense. So although these may be less important to the viewers, it makes them no less important to the final product.

Can you think of any film trailers that you thought were especially good or liked?

The examples on the side are just the most repeated ones as there was a long list of ones mentioned once, which I thought weren’t as relevant as its not sticking with lots of people.

4 out of 5 of the films mentioned are films that are currently in the cinema which immediately shows that people remember trailers that they were thought that we good recently having watched them.

Having watched the trailers myself I think what stands out in these trailers are the cinematography which I think is especially important in trailers to almost show off to the views as to locations and the beauty of the film.

What do you feel is a less important feature in making a good film trailer? Although I think that all elements of film trailers are important, I asked this question as I wanted to know what the viewers thought. From the survey, it was more common for people to think typography was least important as well as length (meaning they didn’t like trailers being too long) and too much plot being revealed.I think it is VERY important for trailers to not give too much of the plot away as it automatically makes people not want to see the film or be disappointed when they do. I also think that trailers can be effective if they are longer or short, however I also agree that if trailers are too long then they can become boring and you can loose interest as well as them being in risk of giving too much away. However I do think that setting, typography, and camera angles are very important in trailers in order to give the tone of the film and the plot, while information on the release is really important information to get viewers to go and watch your film.
