• Male (Hundreds of girls wearing skirts and shirts.

• Female as well, because of the men and the band in the video.

• The characters are very diverse, German teacher, Asian love interest, both black and white teenagers in the classroom.

• For teenagers, shown by the rebellious acts of the pupils and the band.

• Older teacher getting things thrown at her, showing the teenagers keen to be free from the oppressive rules. ( also shown by the love interest ignoring the “don’t touch the glass” signs, and the escaped pupils/inmates gathering to watch the band perform, celebrating freedom.

• Also trashing the inside of the complex and the bands performance area.

Socio Economic Status

• Class E, because the video is aimed more at students, who have the free time to watch the video as they aren’t working.

• Could also be Class A, because the band are professionals, although the video is clearly not aimed at professionals.

• Mainstreamers: The band is recognized, and although the original audience was a niche audience, they have grown and become mainstream, and many people will watch the video to be able to conform with other members of society.

General Lifestyles• People who watch this are likely to play music

or listen to music in their free time, and own other cds or music devices.

• Part time work, because they are probably still at school, and will therefore be in short term relationships, if at all, and will still be living with their parents, and their priorities will be things such as hanging around with mates, and socializing.

Appeal

• The video appeals to its target audience in multiple ways:

• Firstly, the young people in the video are freeing themselves from the oppression, and breaking rules, the target audience will like this because the target audience is teenagers, who are stereotypically rebellious.

• Secondly, the sex appeal for both female and male viewers is large, because there is both half naked men and women, to diversify the video as much as possible.

• Also, the fast paced editing and the multitude of camera shots means that there is reason for the viewer to re-watch and try to notice new things in the video.

Uses and Gratifications

• Diversion – Music videos are meant to be entertaining, and provide a level of escapism for the viewer.

• This viewers will be entertained by this video, because the storyline provides escapism through the fictional setting.

• Personal Relationships – The main relationship in this video is between the couple separated by the glass, and the extremity of how the relationship is depicted could make the viewer think about their own lifestyle and relationships.

• Personal Identity – Although many viewers will not be able to compare themselves to the video, they will be able to compare their childhood, and perhaps lingering dreams of being a star to the band, and this could make them an active consumer of the bands products.

• Surveillance – The video does give an insight into what is happening in the world at the moment; the youth is beginning to rebel and take over various parts of society.

• The viewer will watch this drastic exaggeration of what is happening in society and be able to relate what they have seen with it.
