NIGHT!
WHAT IS NEEDED IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH A SUCCESSFUL RETELL?
RETELL: IF A STUDENT READS WITH ACCURACY AND FLUENCY, CHECK THEIR RETELL BY ASKING THEM, “WHAT DID YOU JUST READ?” IF THE CHILD HAS A
DIFFICULT TIME REMEMBERING, TEACH THEM THE STP STRATETGY.
AFTER THE CHILD READS A PAGE-
S- STOP AND ASK WHAT THEY JUST READ
T-THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY JUST READ. HAVE THEM CLOSE THEIR EYES AND TRY TO PICTURE THE TEXT.
P-PARAPHRASE BRIEFLY TELL WHAT THEY JUST READ
VISUALIZEGOOD READERS CREATE MENTAL IMAGES AS THEY READ. VISUALIZATION HELPS
THE READER REMEMBER AN UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS READ.
B-M-EOnce students are able to tell you what they have read on a page, we can now use the Beginning-Middle-End strategy with them. This will help get a full comprehensive retell of the story.
When using the B-M-E strategy we are looking for accurate sequencing.
Beginning should include the characters and perhaps the setting and problem in the story
Middle should include some events related to the story.
End should confirm the resolution to the story. With this age student- the goal is not to remember everything, but rather to tell the most important events in sequence.
