Gypsum

The Egyptians were the first to use the gypsum as a building material in the pyramids

The gypsum items possess the following important properties

1.They are incombustible 2.They possess relatively small bulk density 3.They serve as good sound absorbers

Gypsum Board Is a panel made of gypsum plaster.

It is pressed between two thick sheets of paper.

It is used to make interior walls and ceilings.

The main reasons for gypsum board being a popular material for false ceiling are a) Ease of installationb) Fire resistancec) Sound insulationd) Durability , Economy & Versatility.

Advantages Cost Quite cheaper.Easy workability Flexible in nature and is as easy to work with . Its is easy to nail ,screw and cut with ordinary carpenters and tools.

Light weight It is a light weight product with its weighting less than 500N/m2. Its light weight offers economy structural costs and transportation

Fire resistance Has the ability to retard the spread to fire .it can give fire protection upto 2hours.

Advantages of gypsum board Smooth surface Its

surface is smooth and hence any type of inferior finish such as painting ,veneering ,wall plastering etc can be easily carried out .

Time of installation Offers scope of better planning and greater control over construction schedule.

Final finish Its unique tapered edges makes it possible to join boards and provide a good finishing to the ceiling

Plaster Of Paris (P.O.P.)

Page 12: False ceiling materials

Advantages.

• A smooth, uniform finish.• The surface can be recovered or painted.• Easy to construct and maintain.• The ceiling are really light.

Page 13: False ceiling materials

Facts about POP.• Plaster of Paris a type of ceiling that originated from

France.• It’s a mixture of calcined gypsum (calcium sulfate

dehydrate), sand and water.• When these ingredients are mixed together and the

subsequent paste is allowed to dry, it hardens and forms a tough coating.

Page 14: False ceiling materials

Facts about POP.• As tough as POP is when dry, it is still soft to be sanded and

carved.• Used majorly to create decorative molding. POP hardens

instantly when water is added to it.• It is applied to form fiber board or a wood base, which is then

suspended from the ceiling.

Page 17: False ceiling materials

L-angle.• This is important part.• Provides support to false ceiling members.• It totally depends on design.•Weight and size of the material used.• They are fixed at the places of joineries to support the members bond.

Installation.• Fixing the framework directly on the beams

and structural ceiling.• Fixing the wall supports and angle

supports.• Fixing the suspended framework on the

supporting members.• Fixing of POP boards.

Page 19: False ceiling materials

Installation.• Applying insulation.• Finishing the joints.• Edging profile.• Fixing the moldings and decorative motifs.• Final finishing with paints for desired effects.

Glass

Page 23: False ceiling materials

Glass

• Usual transparent glass is never used, as it contradicts the very idea of a false ceiling - to hide from the viewer's eye any defects and irregularities and other services wiring, plumbing, air conditioning systems , etc.• Frosted glass is mostly used other than back painted, stained glass, mirrors , etc.

Page 24: False ceiling materials

Mirror Ceiling.

Page 25: False ceiling materials

Advantages.

• Creates the illusion of depth, it makes the room visually higher.• Resist moisture and temperature fluctuations.• Easy to clean and maintain.• Suspended glass ceiling with stained-glass panels can be decorated with the image or using the ink-jet printing on special equipment, or a sticker on top of the glass transparent film with a pattern.

Page 26: False ceiling materials

Disadvantages.

•Hard and brittle to cut, drill and work with.• Suspended glass ceilings are quite heavy compared to other ceiling materials.•Most dangerous if any glass tile breaks during repair works.•Not advisable in earthquake prone areas.

Acrylic glass Ceiling

Page 30: False ceiling materials

Acrylic glass CeilingBest alternative for Glass ceilings.

Advantages • Very easy to handle.• Doesn’t break on falling.• Inkjet printing on the panels

of frosted Plexiglas can create effect of stained-glass ceiling .

Disadvantages • Is like plastic and tends to

deform due to low melting point.• Cannot be placed near

halogen or incandescent lamp.

Polyvinyl chloride (P.V.C.) tiles

Advantages • Long term durability.• Lighter in weight.• Very easy to handle.• Doesn’t crack easily under

stress.• Doesn’t crack when being

drilled even if drilled close to the edge .

Disadvantages • Is like plastic and tends to

deform due to low melting point.• Cannot be placed near halogen

or incandescent lamp.• Cannot be polished to restore

its clarity.

1. Difficult to work, cut and drill.2. Heavy and less flexible than

PVC.3. Cracks easily under stress.4. Cracks while working near

edges.5. Can be polished to restore its

clarity.6. Doesn’t change color with

time.7. Can be polished to attend

finishing.8. More sturdy than PVC.9. Starts burning slowly.10.Cheaper than PVC.

Cement Fiber Boards.

Page 36: False ceiling materials

Cement Fiber Boards. Advantages • Long term durability.• Lighter in weight.• Very easy to handle.• Fire, moisture and

shock proof.• Good sound

absorption.• Healthy and

Environmental( No any asbestos and other harmful composition which is modern construction materials)

Page 37: False ceiling materials

WoodAdvantages • Very economical.• Natural acoustical properties.• Esthetic appeal ,gives

richness to the space.• Effective for creating rustic

look.• Gives warmth to the space.

Disadvantages • Comparatively heavier than

other materials.• Lessens the visual height of

the room.• Cannot withstand attack of

pest like termites for long period.• Not recommended for damp

spaces or leakage prone areas.

Wooden Ceilings

Page 39: False ceiling materials

Traditional Wooden Ceiling

Page 40: False ceiling materials

Basic Materials.• The material used in false ceiling is made of up either hard wood or MDF or particle board.• In MDF mica is used to glue the either sides of the board.•Using solid wood is not recommended because it is heavy.• The one on the inner side of the board is known as “balanced surface”.• The on the external side i.e. the visible surface is known as the “finished surface”.•Where as the wood gives the natural finish when polished.

Page 41: False ceiling materials

WOOD MOLDING• Also known as wood molding or patti or trim is used as an enhancing accent in a home.• Before the 19th century, the presence of wood molding in once home was a symbol of wealth & taste.• Nowadays, wood molding frequently used to conceal the seam where a window or door coverage with the wall or to draw attention to the transition from the floor or to the ceiling to the wall.

Acoustic Board • Board made of sound absorbing materials. • Its job is to provide sound insulation.•  Ceiling is porous. • When sound passes through an acoustic board, the intensity of sound is decreased. • The loss of sound energy is balanced by producing heat energy. • Used in auditoriums, halls, seminar rooms, libraries etc
