UPDATE2010

eScience Fellows OrientationThe eSLib program officially launched on August, 27 with a kick-off meeting at the iSchool. Besides the eight eSLib fellows – Trisha Adamus (Chemistry), Thea Atwood (Psychology, Biology), Kayleigh Bohémier (English, Astronomy), Susan Borda (IT/IS), Alison Miner (Anthropology, Archaeology), Cliff Snellgrove (Marine Biology), Gisella Stalloch (Biology), Christopher Turner (Mathematics) – who were selected in a demanding application process, we had the pleasure to welcome a large delegation from our partner the Mann Library at Cornell University as well as representatives from SU Library and Office of Sponsored Research.

Mentorship Program

As an essential part of the program, every eSLib fellow has his/her own mentor who shall give advice in all eScience, research, and career-related matters. The mentorship program provides students with opportunities to be exposed to world-class science libraries, as well as innovative eScience projects, among others including the Cornell University Geospatial Information Repository (http://cugir.mannlib.cornell.edu) and the Economics, Statistics, and Marketing Information System for the United States Department of Agriculture (http://usda.mannlib.cornell.edu) that currently take place at the Mann Library. We are grateful to the 8 librarians from Cornell serving as the mentors for our eSLib fellows: Kathy Chiang, Jeremy Cusker, Dianne Dietrich, Jim Morris-Knower, Mary Ochs, Jill Powell, Leah Solla and Gail Steinhart. The mentorship program was launched on September 17, 2010 at Cornell University and included an overview of Cornell Library’s eScience efforts and a guided tour of the Mann Library and state-of-the-art life sciences laboratories. The mentorship program reception was an inspiring and eye-opening experience for the eSLib fellows (Please see press release1).

eSLib Fellow Projects

To sharpen the eSLib Fellows’ research skills and to expose them to the eScience environment, all of them are involved in smaller research projects under the supervision of project PI Jian Qin, co-PI Gail Steinhart, and research assistants Andreas Kuehn (former research assistant John D’Ignazio is taking a “sabbatical” as a Graduate Fellow hosted by the National Center for Atmospheric Research). Two SU librarians Natasha Cooper and Scott Warren are also actively involved in the projects. The research projects include:

1. Content analysis of institutional Data Policies (Atwood, Bohémier)

2. Requirements and tools for institutional dashboard (Borda)

3. Data management, sharing, and dissemination Policies (Adamus, Miner)

4. Interview and survey of scientists to understand their needs and expectations for institutional support for data Management (Stalloch, Snellgrove)

5. Open source community data management (Turner) Further information about these projects is available on our eSLib website (http://eslib.ischool.syr.edu/).

eScience Labs

The eScience Lab has become the monthly platform for our fellows to exchange information about their experiences, their insights, and reflections on eScience. Since the beginning of the first semester, the eScience Lab has been held twice, addressing the initial setup of the fellows’ research project and looking at tools for collaboration in eScience. We had the pleasure to have the following guests: Trish Lowney, PhD, executive director of the office of sponsored programs; June Szymanski, Associate CIO; Scott Warren, Bibliographer & Librarian; Tasha Cooper, Bibliographer & Librarian; all of Syracuse University.

New Website eslib.ischool.syr.edu

The new semester also started with a redesigned website – http://eslib.ischool.syr.edu for the eSLib program. As a dissemination vehicle, it contains goings-on, results from the eScience lab meetings, course materials, and other eScience and program related information to the interested parties. We also plan to use it as a platform for project partners and students to present their work and interact with the broader eScience and Librarianship community. A special incentive to visit our new website is a collection of links and eScience related content as well as a blog “Day in the Life” maintained by our mentors who are reporting on their life in the eScience: http://eslib.ischool.syr.edu/blog
