1) ACADEMICS

There are just over four school weeks remaining before examinations commence. Teachers are busy finalizing School Based Assessment exercises and completing classroom work in the time that remains. It is a busy time for all and I ask our pupils to manage their time well so that they can be properly prepared for the exams.

URGENT NOTICE FOR ALL PUPILS

NO pupils will be allowed to go home early on any day or after a test without a written letter from the parent requesting this. No emails!

Permission for going home early will only be allowed for emergencies.

If a pupil is too sick to stay for the full day after a test, then they must not come to school to write, but must provide the school with a medical certificate.

PLEASE NOTE!

All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments.

All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a letter from the parent and the relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed (not test days) is also required.

Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.

Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be required.

4) PARENT FORUM

FAIRMONT MUSIC AND ART FESTIVAL

Fairmont hosted a very successful cultural evening on Friday, 17 April 2015, showcasing the art and musical talents of our learners.

The event was enhanced with the incorporation of artwork from about 20 local artists, a number of whom were past pupils of the school.

The girls from our Hospitality Society received a free lesson on the art of canapé-making from Karen Hough, an artist, food guru, and parent of Fairmont. These were then served by the society girls, along with some sushi at the beginning of the evening.

The combination of music, art and food made for a superb cultural experience and one that was enjoyed by staff, parents and learners alike.

The Parent Forum wish to thank everyone who assisted in making this event possible, especially the following sponsors:

THE MATRIC EXPERIENCE EXPO 2015

Last year saw the Parent Forum embarking on a new fundraising venture in the form of a Matric Dance Expo.

This year we are planning on doing things on a much larger scale!

The Matric Experience Expo will take place from the 21st to the 24th of May in the Tygervalley Shopping Centre and will focus on all aspects of the Matric learner, including the Matric Dance, the Plett Rage, Tertiary Education, Study Loans and Bursaries, Driver’s Licences etc.

Cream Events Library and a group of very dedicated Fairmont moms are working furiously at contacting prospective exhibitors, and offering them the opportunity to be a part of this exciting event!

A BIG thank you to Anna Conradie, Barbara Sithole and Di Pretorius for their hard work and commitment.

We will once again be appealing to the public to donate any unwanted eveningwear, make-up, jewellery, shoes, etc. to the Princess Project, a charity that provides these items to those less fortunate, and who cannot afford the costs involved with a matric dance.

If you’re doing any cupboard cleaning before winter, please remember to keep these items aside and bring them to the expo at Tygervalley!

WORKPARTY

The Parent Forum will once again be holding a work party on Saturday, 9 May, from 13h00.

More information about the work we will be doing will follow shortly.

The RCL members will be attending as well to give their homeroom a makeover.

Please diarise this date, and come along to assist in improving the facilities of our children’s school, whilst meeting and making new friends at the same time.

5) CAREL DU TOIT FUN WALK

105 Fairmont learners, family members, family pets and Monty Bear walked the 5km fun walk in aid of the Carel Du Toit school for the deaf. Thank you to our Fairmont family for supporting this good cause.

6) WON LIFE : VOLUNTEER AT OUR LITERACY CENTRE

The Literacy Centre, run in Fisantekraal, is a volunteer-driven organization that relies on willing members of the public to volunteer their time reading with those learners eager to learn this very important milestone.

With each volunteer, Won Life is able to extend their reach and really make a difference in the community of Fisantekraal. If you can spare an hour or two each week, please email Won Life on:

Watching the faces of these children as they reach each small milestone will give you a great sense of reward.

7) DRUM MAJORETTES

The drummies participated in the 1st Large Drill competition on Saturday at JG Meiring High School. The team did us proud and marched beautifully.

Their coach, Ms Donachie, and assistant coaches Tammy Winch, Kelly Swanepoel and Mrs La Cock, can be very proud of this achievement seeing that half the team consists of new girls who have joined drummies for the first time this year and never marched in a competition before. The team marched as professionals and looked stunning out on the field.

The leader, Timone, and the squad (mainly new girls) achieved second place. The overall placement was 4th.

Well done and congratulations to our drummies!

The Land Service is going camping!

Students are invited to attend the Land Service camp taking place from 8 - 10 May 2015 in Grabouw. At the camp they will be joining Land Service members from clubs all over the Western Cape, and participating in a variety of fun activities and games.

Campers will be leaving for the weekend on Friday, 8 May 2015, directly after school, and returning on Sunday morning, 10 May 2015.

All interested students must please rsvp before Wednesday, 29 April 2015, with Miss Matthee in Prefab 4.

12) ORANGE RIVER 2015

On 7 March 2015, 18 students and 3 teachers set off on an adventure to the Orange River. It was an incredible trip with many memories made. This is a great opportunity for learners to experience the beauty of nature, make friends, and to have fun. We offer this trip annually to any learners at Fairmont High and would like to encourage you to send them on this one in a lifetime experience.

Fairmont U19 vs Jan Kriel

It was another early kick off at 08h00; a beautiful morning with no wind and clear skies.

The bears looked more intent upon their arrival, warms up went off well, and the execution appeared to be in place. The opposition had been observed the previous sports day and we knew that it was going to be a physical encounter.

It took only the kick-off to know Fairmont were in for a long tough battle with Jan Kriels’ forwards running hard straight lines and their No. 10 being strong in the carry. The scrums were relatively evenly matched and the line-outs were a bit scrappy by the standards set. There was some good running interplay between both teams and once again same mistakes made at break downs.

The first half was tough and physical with no quarter given or spared. The boys were in it and as the game progressed, one could sense that Fairmont were now starting to get the ascendancy. A couple of early penalties were traded and, at half time, the boys looked ready to take it to the opposition.

Fairmont’s strength lay in their well-structured defense and that laid the platform for some good rugby. The belief in themselves was getting stronger and this was led by the eventual Man of the Match and Captain, Jonothan Nel. Hooker, Mark Fairhurst, was first to cross the whitewash for Fairmont. Then the ever-impressing Center, Jordan Kroll, rounded off 2 excellent tries in the second half. Joshua Julies was on song with the boot and converted all opportunities to the poles. A few players deserve a special mention, but none more so than the young Jordan Pugin who was a last minute replacement. It was a hard fought win and, although scrappy at times, Fairmont can walk away with a well-deserved victory. Once again discipline from the Bears was good and the team started to gel nicely.

There were lots of positives to take from the game and the boys showed what they could be capable of for the season. We now look forward to an exciting season with the foundation now laid for an ever-promising young side. Final score: 24 : 8.

U14 vs Bloubergrant

Michael de Klerk and Zackariah Conradie led out the Trojans on a beautiful sunny morning at Table View High School to take on Bloubergrant.

By halftime we were leading 29 : 0. The backline put together some awesome moves, leading to spectacular tries. The forwards struggled to get going, but got into the game in the second half.

Once again, our defense was solid and we scored 9 tries, converted 4, finishing on 53 : 0.

It was however a total team effort. At least 4 of the players have never played rugby before. Well done to Cian and Sean. They did a great job preparing the boys.

U19 BOYS’ SOCCER : 5-A-SIDE SOCCER TOURNAMENT AT CENTURY CITY

We started off with a 1 : 2 loss to Reddham House, but after a spirited team talk, we managed a 2 : 0 win against CBC.

In the second leg of the tournament, the group played against CBC and demolished them 4 : 0. In our final group game, we had an early 1 : 0 lead against Reddham, but they scored a last minute goal to effectively knock us out of the tournament in group stages.

It was disappointing to go out in the group stages, but we had fun and we learnt valuable lessons about 5-a-side football which will hopefully help us in our next tournament on the 15 May 2015.

Thank you to Coach Joshua and Coach Robert for entering us into the tournament, and to Mr Veldman for accompanying us.

U15A GIRLS’ SOCCER

The U15A soccer ladies played in their very first tournament on Saturday. They decided to help out another team and, on top of their own fixtures, played others too. These ladies committed to 6 games in a row - not many others could match this level of fitness!

Well done to these remarkable soccer ladies! Fairmont ended up second out of 8 schools in the tournament, and two of our junior ladies have made it through to the Provincial Zonal team - congratulations Ilse Harmse and Emily Willson.

14) CROSS COUNTRY KICKS OFF WITH A BANG!

The cross country 2015 season started off with a bang.

Out of an average contingent of 200 runners per race, Nina Dunleavy (Girls’ U17) came first, while Samuel van der Merwe, Fairmont’s Boys’ Captain, Boys’ U17, came second.

Carmen van der Merwe (Girls’ U19), Fairmont’s Girls’ Captain (Girls’ U19) came fourth.

Four of our Grade 8 girls, namely Emma Cole, Mark Burger, Aakifah van Rooyen and Rebecca Walker, also did us proud.

16) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE

WEEPING WATERS

Inspector Albertus Beeslaar has left the ruthless city, only to have his hopes of finding peace and quiet in the Kalahari shattered by the brutal murder of artist Freddie Swarts and her adopted daughter.

But Freddie’s journalist sister Sara is not convinced that this was a typical farm attack.

Amid a spate of stock thefts, Beeslaar must solve this high-profile crime, all the while training his two rookie partners, Ghaap and Pyl.

After more murders, the disturbing puzzle grows increasingly sinister, as age-old secrets and hostilities surface, spurring the local inhabitants to violent action. No one is above suspicion, not least the mysterious Bushman farm manager and falconer, Dam.
