World Famous Athlete, Bodybuilder, Actor, and “Politician”

• Arnold was born on July 30th, 1947 in Thal, Austria. • He grew up playing sports, and chose bodybuilding over

soccer when he was around 14 years of age.• At the age of 15, Arnold began weight training and his

seriousness for the gym truly began.• Arnold was drafted into the Austrian Army at age 18, and

during this time, he won the Junior Mr. Europe contest.

Personal Bio: Early Years

• In 1967, Arnold won the Mr. Universe competition, being the youngest person to ever receive this title at the age of 20.

• He went on to win Mr. Universe 5 more times.

• In the 70’s, Arnold won 7 first place titles for the Mr. Olympia competition.

Accomplishments:

• Arnold has also won other competitions, such as the Styrian Junior Weightlifting Championship (1964), the International Powerlifting Championship (1966), and the German Powerlifting Championship (1968) to name a few.

Accomplishments Continued:

• Arnold used bodybuilding as his way to get into the United States, and by 1968, at the age of 21, he moved to Los Angeles, California.

• Once there, Arnold trained at the now-famous Gold’s Gym Venice Beach.

• Arnold transitioned from a bodybuilding career to an acting career in the 1970’s.

• His first film was Hercules in New York.

• His accent made it tough for him to be understood, he was told his body was too big, and his name was way too long.

Making a name in Hollywood:

• He continued acting, and in 1976, he was awarded a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year for his film Stay Hungry.

• His acting career boosted from there, and he drew more attention than ever about his body, so in 19 77, he made the film Pumping Iron. (Which is one of my favorites, if you haven’t seen it- you should!)

Acting:

• Arnold went on to make MANY films in the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s.

• Again, his movie quotes are often remembered by many!

• His body appearance made him one of the most influential people for bodybuilding and acting in Hollywood.

Acting Continued:

• Arnold retired from acting when he became the 38th governor of California.

• He was governor from 2003 to 2010.

• His focus was on public service.

Retirement from Acting:

• Arnold is back in Hollywood and working on an autobiography.

• He is currently a Chairman of the After School All-Stars, which promotes after school programs for children. Watch the Youtube Video below for a funny promotion to raise money for this program.

Present Day:

• Not only did I love Arnold when I was a kid growing up, but I loved him even more when I became interested in working out and watched Pumping Iron for the first time. I never really knew the history behind his major successes in Bodybuilding until I watched that film. He has had a huge impact on the culture of bodybuilding and working out. Even as a female who lifts weights, he has impacted my mind set when I hit the gym. His way of thinking about working out makes me want to push myself even harder. Overall, I think he has had a great influence on people, even with his blunt and sometimes ridiculous sayings/actions.
