Speaker Biographies – Breakout Sessions Financial Considerations
Event Facilitator: Jon Boyce, Export Trade Finance Adviser, UK Export Finance
Jon Boyce is the Senior Specialist Export Finance Adviser for the Northern Regions. Jon initially trained
as a manufacturing consultant, focused on improving company profitability. Jon has worked with
Scottish companies raising equity, mezzanine and debt finance to support growth and is experienced in
trade finance and international trade. Jon has worked in the US, Europe, Middle East and Japan.
About UK Export Finance
UK Export Finance is UK Export Credit Agency, (formally Export Credit Guarantee Dept). UK Export
Finance complements the private market by providing government assistance to exporters and
overseas investors in the form of insurance policies (such as export credit insurance & political risk
insurance) and Bank Guarantees against specific export orders covering working capital, confirmed
letters of credit and performance bonds. UK Export Finance can also provide a guarantee to a Bank that
makes a loan to an overseas buyer for UK capital goods/services.

Anne Featherstone, Investment Manager, Scottish Investment Bank
Anne Featherstone works in the Financial Readiness team within the Scottish Investment Bank, the
investment arm of Scottish Enterprise. Anne works with companies in order to help them prepare to
attract growth funding, principally new equity into their businesses. Anne trained as a chartered
accountant with PWC then worked in the corporate area of Bank of Scotland for several years. Anne
joined Scottish Enterprise as an account manager and has now worked in many different areas of SE.
Catriona McCracken, Transactions Manager, Scottish Investment Bank
After graduating from Heriot-Watt University in 2002 with an MA(Hons) in Management, Catriona joined
Deloitte & Touche as a Corporate Tax Advisor in Edinburgh. During her 7 years with Deloitte, she
qualified as a Chartered Accountant (2005) and had the opportunity to work with a broad range of
companies and sectors from Cambridge to Aberdeen, before taking up a role as an Income Tax Advisor
in Auckland, New Zealand specialising in the new R&D Tax Credit regime during its introduction. On her
return to the UK in 2009, Catriona joined Scottish Enterprise as a Regional Selective Assistance grant
appraisal executive. 5 years on Catriona now works as a transaction manager in the Scottish
Investment Bank division of SE, supporting investment into both exciting early stage companies and
established companies with growth potential.

Joanne Hills, Solutions Delivery Manager, Trade & International Transaction Services UK,
Royal Bank of Scotland
I have worked for RBS for over 20 years in a range of roles covering personal, business and corporate
banking. I have worked within our transaction services business for five years focussing on supporting
and assisting clients who trade overseas whether by importing, exporting or both. Key areas of my role
involve understanding clients’ plans and aspirations relative to international trade, identifying and
assessing the risks associated with this aspect of their business and exploring ways in which RBS can
offer support to maximise the potential.

Ian Burns, International Trade Director, Global Trade and Receivables Finance, HSBC
I joined the HSBC Group (Midland Bank) in 1975 and worked in North East England for over 20 years,
lastly as manager of the Groups Newcastle International Branch, before moving to Yorkshire in 2000. I
have been working in international trade finance since 1987 helping business protect and grow their
overseas business. In 2011 I moved to a new role managing a team of International Trade Managers
supporting UK businesses across the North.

Event Facilitator: Alan Linton, ICT Specialist, Scottish Enterprise
Alan Linton is an experienced ICT and ebusiness consultant. After graduating from the University of
Paisley in 1993, he worked as a multimedia CD Rome programmer, creating corporate training and
promotional material. In 1997 he became a partner in a very successful Scottish web site developer. He
has spent the last 15 years as an ebusiness consultant, both independently and with Scottish Enterprise
and partner organisations. In that time he has helped hundreds of Scottish businesses improve their
online presence. He has spoken on ecommerce and web site design and usability at a number of
national and international events. He joined Scottish Enterprise in 2009.
Chris Elvery, ICT Specialist, Scottish Enterprise
Chris Elvery is an ICT Specialist with Scottish Enterprise, working with High Growth Scottish companies
to develop and implement IT strategies. His particular focus is Business improvement, Digital Marketing
and ecommerce, the latter gleaned from an early career in traditional Bricks & Mortar companies (Boots
and John Menzies) and the setting up of his first International ecommerce site back in 1997 selling
Scottish Music & Film. He has spoken on the subjects of international ecommerce, future IT trends,
better customer engagement and inbound marketing throughout Scotland.

Sarah Chanter, Director, eteaket

Bill Gordon, CEO, Red Torpedo
Bill Gordon, the great-great-grandson of whisky magnate William Grant, has an acute awareness of
Scottishness at home and abroad. He is a fifth-generation scion of the family business – one of the
largest and most successful in Scotland, which produces Glenfiddich, the first single malt whisky to
become a global bestseller. His experience of Scottishness is about family – he co-founded and chaired
the family council that unites the owner of the company, William Grant & Sons, to its management but

John McIlvogue, Managing Director, Stevens & Graham
John McIlvogue is an experienced entrepreneur whose background is as diverse as a stained glass
window manufactured in the U.K and Middle East, managing a 50 employee interiors business. Mr
McIlvogue started a flooring business 7 years ago covering both domestic and commercial market
places in the U.K. In 2013 he acquired Stevens & Graham, one of Glasgow’s oldest carpet companies
that specialises in Tartan carpets. In the 14 months in charge he has taken the company from dealing
with a Scottish customer base to one that now supplies a global audience. He has managed to secure
U.S, Dutch and Canadian distribution and is currently working on a number of other territories. In his
spare time he likes to travel and relax with his young family.

Developing Your Products and Services for International Markets
Event Facilitator: Morag Eaton, Innovation Specialist, Scottish Enterprise
Morag Eaton is one of fifteen Innovation Specialists employed by Scottish Enterprise with the aim of
helping Scottish companies use innovation practices to grow business value and profitability. This may
include helping a company utilise innovation in a more strategic way, perhaps addressing new
international markets or developing new business models. Prior to joining Scottish Enterprise, Morag
worked with NCR Ltd starting as a developer, moving through various development and senior
engineering roles to Director of Engineering. Morag worked on ATMs (Cash dispensing machines),
Kiosks and NCR’s branch and system software. The complexity of ATM’s provided in-depth experience
in software and systems development alongside a sound understanding of mechanical and electronic
development. Morag specialised in systems integration test and is a Six Sigma Black Belt achieved
through cross-organisational process improvements. Morag has been an Innovation Specialist with
Scottish Enterprise for 6 years and is an Improve Innovation Management guide.

Charles Broadfoot, Innovation Specialist, Scottish Enterprise
Charles Broadfoot is one of fifteen Innovation Specialists employed by Scottish Enterprise with the aim
of helping Scottish companies use innovation practices to grow business value and profitability. This
may include helping a company utilise innovation in a more strategic way, perhaps addressing new
international markets or developing new business models. Charles started his career in engineering with
an apprenticeship at Alexander Dennis as a coachbuilder. He gained an honours degree in
Management Science at Stirling University and followed up with a Masters degree in Computer
Integrated Manufacturing at Strathclyde. Charles spent 5 years working in Strathclyde University on
research investigating technology acquisition and strategy in Scottish Electronics companies. This
experience examining the commercialisation processes led to a position in Lanarkshire Technology and
Innovation Centre as a University Business Advisor and was followed by 8 years working as an
innovation consultant with UXL providing innovation consultancy services for both public sector and
private clients. He has been in this current Scottish Enterprise role for over 4 years and is a certified
Improve Innovation Management guide.

Safeguarding Your Intellectual Assets
Event Facilitator: Martin Layton, Intellectual Assets Specialist, Scottish Enterprise
The Scottish Enterprise Intellectual Assets Specialist team comprises 6 advisers working with
businesses across Scotland, to support business growth through enhanced management of intangible
assets, including intellectual property. Martin has over 20 years of experience in the field of intellectual
property and wider intellectual asset management. He worked at the UK Intellectual Property Office
from 1991 – 2006 - latterly as a trade mark examination team leader and Hearing Officer – and
subsequently undertook periods of secondment to the Intellectual Assets Centre and as a Seconded
National Expert to OHIM (the European Union Trade Marks and Designs Registry). Martin rejoined the
Intellectual Assets Centre full time in 2009 and transferred in to Scottish Enterprise in April 2012,
supporting businesses in: intellectual property strategy development; wider intellectual asset
management (IAM); value creation and release through intellectual property and IAM; undertaking
intellectual asset and intellectual property management to underpin business growth and
internationalisation.
Catherine Potts, Intellectual Assets Specialist, Scottish Enterprise
Catherine has over 20 years experience of running small businesses in the private sector. Catherine
joined the Intellectual Assets Centre in 2008 and quickly developed a passion for the field of Intellectual
Asset Management, so much so that she undertook a Law degree in her free time to complement her
growing knowledge of the area. Catherine began working with Scottish Enterprise in April 2012, where
she supports Scottish businesses to identify, manage and exploit their intangible assets for optimum
value creation, globalisation and ultimately sustained economic growth.

Nikolaus Sennhauser, Project Manager, Bright Idea Scotland
Nikolaus joined Targeting Innovation in August 2007 as part of the Graduates for Business programme
and is now a Senior Consultant. He has been responsible for the management and delivery of a number
of EU-funded Framework Programme 6 and 7 projects, promoting and facilitating knowledge transfer
and innovation. He is also a member of the team delivering the Enterprise Europe Network service in
the Yorkshire and Humber, helping local companies find partners overseas. Nikolaus’ main engagement
is currently the project management and delivery of the Scottish Government-funded Bright Idea
Scotland service, aimed at helping inventors identify and confirm the commercial potential of their ideas.

Bright Idea Scotland is the Scottish Government funded inventor support service. Our aim is to help
Scottish individuals and businesses with ideas for new products or services confirm the commercial
potential of their ideas and improve their chances of success. We do this by providing advice and

David Fulton, Director & Patent Attorney, Lincoln IP
David Fulton joined the firm in January 2009 from a well-known Glasgow private practice. He is a
Chartered Patent Attorney and UK Registered Trade Mark Attorney as well as a European Patent
Attorney and European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. David has a technical background in physics,
lasers and optoelectronics. On completing his PhD at the University of St Andrews David joined the
patent profession in 2000. Since then David has gained considerable experience advising clients in a
range of high technology fields within both the industrial and academic sectors. David presently splits
his time between Glasgow and Aberdeen. Specialties: IP services in the fields of Oil and Gas,
