How effective is the combination of your main task and your ancillaries? Media evaluation question 2:

Why use ancillaries?Ancillaries have a massive role in making sure that your product is spread around the widest area of your target audience possible. It is important to realise that not everyone from your target audience looks at media through the same medium as your main advert.

TV FilmWebMagazineRadio

Because of this you need ways to reach them which will point towards your main advert. So lots of people in the target audience will notice it. TV,FILM,Magazine,WEB,radio links to main task

As your ancillaries are supposed to be linked towards your main advert they need to have stimuli which has a direct connection to the main advert otherwise they wont be able to link the two and thus wont buy the product which you are selling through the main advert

To Illustrate this look at these pictures, I amdemonstrating that if you had an apple appearin your TV advert, you can try an incorporatethat element in other media outlets, like film and magazine I had to produce two ancillaries for my media project, I chose to produce a radio advertisement and web-pop-up

So if we run through each ancillary one at a time I can break down the individual elements which make my ancillaries effective when paired with the main task

Finding the connectionWith my radio advertisement I had to think quite carefully as it was something I had never done, so any of the conventions which would be in a radio advertisement were unbeknown to me. Also as it was completely dependent on the sound where as my main task is mainly visual it was quite difficult. After doing some research into radio advertisements I realise that it was quite common to have a kind of background noise in the advert. As if its a recording of something visual but its the audio which has been taken out and made singular

SOUND IN THE BackgroundI thought this was a great start, so I went on a hunt around the internet to find some ambient background noise which fitted with the male fragrance advertisement.I chose to do it for this specific advert as it contained an interesting environment which would have a lot of interesting sounds. Because of this idea I looked for some forest ambience after looking around for a while I found some really nice background ambience, mainly bird noises and earthy sounds, as combined with other noises such as wind.

I thought it sounded really nice and linked a great deal with the original advert, as it captured the environment really nicely.

AMBIENT SOUND

If you look at this image, you can understand, a part of what I was going for, the landscape is extremely dense with forest. The ambient sound is perfect, and really has a distinct link to the place, also as he is alone, the loudness of all the noises are more apparent to him this is reflected in the radio advert.

WHos that in the radio? The second thing I did when creating this was to try and create a feeling of movement, like there was someone in the radio, I did this by adding in crunchy footsteps like you would hear when walking through the woods, as my character is doing in my advert.I found some really nice sounds on a free sound effects website. In my main task the character in the male advert is on a journey trying to find his lover, walking and exploring the woods.

FOOTSTEPSThe footsteps reflected that movement from the main task, I also tried to make the footsteps sound a bit heavier than normal as the character in the advert is quite a big man.

Public speakingI thought that putting the same monologue from the TV advert over the top of the radio advert would show that it is from the same company and is for the same product.Le PapierI layered this over the top, now the radio advert is starting to look as if the visual advert wasn't as cinematic, you could argue they are very similar in terms of their sound. This is also accompanied by a sign off telling the audience that this an advert for a fragrance named Le Papier.

MONOLOGUE

DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUNAfter listening to my radio advertisement a few times it still felt like there was something missing. I started to think about what other elements of of my main task could I try and recreate or reflect in my radio advertisement. I though that the theme of the main task while it is a romance, the male fragrance has another theme of adventure and motivation. So again I looked to the internet and found some free cinematic, atmospheric emotive music, something which you might see out of a film.

CINEMATIC

Ancillary 2 - up from the web they popFor my other ancillary I used the women advert as a basis for what to create the web-pop-up around. As both my films were quite different it would of been hard to try and link everything from both into one ancillary as it would probably be too overcrowded and not very easily understandable.I found the web-pop-up slightly harder as I had to focus on the visual elements as well. So everything which is on there has to have some relevance.

every great has to start somewhereThe background was the most important thing to start, I went through a number of ideas originally starting with a wallpaper pattern of roses as it linked with the theme of romance.

But after some thinking, it didn't seem as if it was shouting any actual link. So I chose to use a screenshot of the girl in my main task to use as the background as I knew it was a direct link.

DIRECT LINKBADThe screenshot I chose I felt like it captured the whole essence of the main task, with her looking out at the window as if trying to reach her lover.

it just looks like a squiggleThe next thing which I needed in my web-pop-up was some text as this was part of the conventions of a web-pop-up. Choosing the font was quite important, I stuck with the font which I used for the credits in the main task as it has a direct link and looks really nice.

I chose to make the colour of the font sort of an off white as to give a paper like effect as my main task is about a letter in some ways, so I thought that fit quite nicely, it is also similar to the colour of the font in the main task. Also it stands out quite a lot and mixes in nicely with the harsher, darker colours of the background.

THE LAST STRAWI needed to think if there was anything else that I could use to link the two together. As the writing of the letter was quite a big part of the main task I created a button style image which the audience could click which was in the shape and style of the letter within the main task, having a kiss mark and calligraphy lettering on the letter.
