Codes and Conventions Comparison- Front Cover

Masthead is bold and at the top of the cover and covers the top portion of the page.

Splash is used and is clear on the cover to help emphasise a significant article within the magazine.

Cover lines are to the side of main image so that attention isn’t distracted from the image. Barcode is on the bottom corner and out of the way so that it doesn’t take people’s eyes off the main image.

Cover lines could be made bolder so they are easier to see compared to an actual magazine. This shows significance towards a specific cover line.

Codes and Conventions- Contents Page

Clear at the top it says Contents- easy to see what the page is about.

The font of the title isn’t used anywhere else on the page.

Variety of images used that link to specific articles within the magazine.

More detail could be added to describe what’s in the magazine.

Specific colour scheme used throughout the page so the page doesn’t look overly messy due to an overflow of colours.

My own contents page is on a singular page rather than a double page spread.

How media technology was used:Front Cover-Photoshop:• The text tool allowed me to make a

masthead that was bold and manoeuvre it around the top of the page so that it filled the top part of the page.

• I was able to use the shape tool to create a splash to highlight specific parts of the magazine e.g. cover lines

• I was able to crop the main image of the cover to how I see fit so it would look like an actual cover.

• I had the ability to incorporate a barcode by using the internet to give my cover a more professional design.

How media technology was used:Contents Page- Quark:• When making the design for the

page I made 3 columns as it was a common design used throughout other contents pages that I researched.

• I was able to import images that I had taken previously to match a common theme within contents pages (variety of images).

• The text tool was useful as it allowed me to use an individual font to make the title of the page stand out compared to the rest of the page.

• I used a specific colour scheme due to contents pages not using mass amounts of colour. Which also helps to make the page stand out more.

• I was also able to import a picture of my front cover which gave a more professional look to the page due to many contents pages having a small image in the corner of the cover.

Strengths and Weaknesses

My use of media technology could have been neater e.g. assembling the photos for my contents page and due to me trying to be more creative with colour, the design looks more amateur.

I used codes and conventions throughout my front cover and contents page to give a more professional design since they have a resemblance to actual magazines.

The colour scheme could have been thought out a bit better for my contents page as it doesn’t match the background but does stand out.

I took all the pictures myself and only used the ones that had relevance to the articles that I used within my contents page.

On my front cover the cover lines could have been more bold so they are easier to see however I tried to incorporate the blue and white since they are the colours on the Priestley logo.

On the contents page- the page numbers and reference to articles are clear and easy to read.
