what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Comparing previous and latest AS pieces

Due to the fact that I never truly finished my preliminary task first time round, and also that this is a re-submission, I have decided to compare my current AS work (re-submission) with the previous piece in order to see what has changed between the two and how I have improved my own skills over the time period.

Front Cover Between my first piece of AS media

product and my resubmission there has been a significant amount of changed that can be seen from the very first page. Although during the production of my resubmitted work I did choose to stick to the same genre and same magazine title, I did not allow that to affect my choices when designing, what I mean by this is I didn’t just decide to copy things straight off my old magazine and add it to my new one, I started completely blank. First of all the masthead of my resubmitted work is much more creative and unique whereas for the first piece I had taken the font straight from InDesign so there was no creative element behind it. Also the effect of it being behind my artist in the new front cover was a nice touch.

Some elements where kept fairly similar, such as the use of the scan code the sell line positioning. Though the colour scheme in my resubmitted piece allows all the text to stand out more and is easily visible, one of the complaints about my first piece was that the background made it hard to read some of the brighter text which was bad considering the front page is the most important part of the magazine. Finally the star image, my current star image (main image) fits much more with my genre because of the way he is dressed, he looks more like a Hip Hop artist than the latter. This allowed my magazine to have more of an RnB and Hip Hop feel and made it look more authentic.

Contents PageAfter looking at my past contents page and my current contents page, it is evident that a lot more time has been put into my resubmitted work and a lot more effort, as you can see there is more happening on the page though it still stays neat and ordered which is what I aimed for. Now although the old contents page also had that organised look about it, it was again the colours I had chosen for the subheadings were not easily visible and the model herself wasn’t really wearing the right attire for me to say that she was and RnB or Hip Hop artist, not a lot of thought and consideration had been put into it, more conventions were followed in my resubmitted work compared to my old piece.I realise that the first time I made a music magazine I didn’t really think it through I just went ahead and made what I thought was a good magazine, but this time round there was more thought on trying to make the magazine look professional and as realistic as possible.

Double Page Spread Personally I’d have to say my old

double page spread was going in the right direction to look good if I’d had more practice with the software and editing skills to make my artist blend with the pages, whereas when you look you can clearly see the jagged crop marks. Compared to my new contents page the old wasn’t too far off, though for the new one I had chosen to be a bit more smarter with it, as in I made it look more like the Vibe magazine double page spread as it made it look more professional then having a lot of text and trying to throw in an image of my artist. With the font also I was more creative using different font for the artist name making it stand out and although I had a drag out quote in my old one, it’s positioning was not well done as it was just put across the top page as if it were the title.

Overall I think that overall more time

and effort was put into my resubmitted work because of the fact that I knew how to improve and where I went wrong, also developing my Photoshop skills allowed my magazine to have that creative element to make it look professional. Time management is also a key factor, whereas last year I was behind and didn’t really start production till late this time I started early as it gave me more time to make edits and continuously make my work better.
