Looking back at my preliminary task what have I learnt in the progression

from it to the full product?

Planning stage Script:

When planning the script for my preliminary task, I did not realise the huge impact a script could have on the audience, however when producing my script for “Rewind”, I realised that I had to think

about the script very carefully because each character could be presented in a specific considering what they say. Therefore, I learnt that the script enables the characters to know exactly what to say

and how. Story board:

The images of my storyboard for my preliminary task was very messy and unclear. This was very disturbing when it came to creating my preliminary task as I kept getting confused how each shot

should be taken. However, having taken this into consideration, when creating “Rewind” story board, I made sure that each shot was presented clearly and detailed. This enabled me to identify

at what position exactly the camera would be situated and how each character, with the use of camera angles would be represented. Therefore, I strongly feel that I learnt the importance of

having a story board because with the use of it, I knew exactly what shots I needed to capture and what order to edit it.

Research into sub conventions: By researching the conventions of thriller and horror and identifying exactly what genre is, enabled me

to understand why “Rewind” is a hybrid. “Rewind” fulfils the conventions of thrillers and horrors and as a result has left my movie to be a hybrid ( containing both horror and thriller. ) “Rewind” is a

psychotic thriller and horror. If I did not do research into sub convention I would not be able to categorize my movie. Therefore, researching enabled me to identify exactly what genre “Rewind” is

and how it meets the demand of each genre through sub conventions. Also, by establishing what sub convention “Rewind” belongs to I was able to plan the costumes, location, mise – en scene,

camera angles and editing my video would have. How did detail planning help me?

Detail planning enabled me to know exactly what shots I needed to capture and what order to edit it in. This helps the process to be smoother. Also, whilst planning I began to get a rough view how my video would look therefore, I could easily adjust my prompts and costumes to match that view

which would be best suitable for my target audience. This would fulfil the expectation of my audience and create the characters characteristic for the audience.

Has my use of specific shot types improved?

During the preliminary task I used a few specific shots such as ‘Reverse shot’, ‘match on action’ and ‘continuity’. However

‘Rewind’ contains a range of shots for example; Panning, wide shot, establishing shot, medium shot, medium close up, close

up, extreme close up, cut in, match on action, cut away, continuity, point of view shot, tilt, and tracking. Moreover, I

strongly believe that my specific shot types had improved. The reason for this is because after finishing my preliminary task I had a deeper understanding of the significance of each shot type and therefore, adjusted each shot type to fit “Rewind”. I

learnt that the way in which each shot type is taken can represents a particular thing, therefore I was very wise when

using the specific shot type to make the audience feel a specific way for the character.

Do I feel more confident with the equipment?

Final Cut Express:Using ‘Final Cut Express’ for my preliminary task felt more like a trail, I

was unaware how to do many things for example, edit, add effects, import files and add audio, however, I now feel much more

confident when using ‘Final Cut Express’ as I am very familiar with the program. ‘Rewind’ contains edits, effects, add audio and

imported files for example, when I created credits on ‘After Effects’ I had to import the file from ‘Final Cut Express’ to add it onto the

timeline.Reflector:

The reflector enabled me to show the characters facial expression which makes the audience feel a certain way for example, when the female body is lying on the floor a reflector is used. The illustrates

the darkness and lighting on the body. This emphasis that the female character has a dark side to her and a ‘pure’ side.
