In what ways does your media

product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions

of real media products?

Forms and ConventionsO In my final product I wanted to be in keeping

with the forms and conventions of thriller. Much of which is characterised by suspense, excitement and tension with some sub-genres of mystery, crime and psychological themes. My final product is based on a psychological thriller, messing with the minds of the main character which is then also placed on the minds of the audience. This is similar to that of 'Shutter Island' which uses a lot of psychological effects such as enigmas and false paths, causing the audience to question throughout.

Techniques O One of the ways I have introduced the theme of

psychological thriller is by creating a disjointed atmosphere flicking back and forth from the past to present. This allows the audience to gain an insight of the theme yet leave them questioning and therefore keeping an interest in the product. This is similar to 'Birdsong' which is based on the war novel by Sebastian Faulks, who uses flashbacks to allow different perspectives of different times, this also controls the amount of information provided to the audience.

Creating Tension and Suspense

O In order to build suspense and tension I have used a variety of camera shots and affects including close ups, over the shoulder, low angle and high angle gaining the characters thoughts and emotions through their expressions. Affects I have used include a grainy low colour texture in various shots portraying a dream affect. This allows the audience to contrast between the past and present again creating a sense of enigma. Tension and suspense is also created through the non-diegetic sound which starts during the animated logos, a slow soft tone building in pace increasing levels of

tension throughout the audience.

TypographyO Typography is also important when trying to

create the tension and suspense required. I have therefore used a simple yet affective San-serif font throughout which is based on a grey background stained with ink/water. This connotes a creepy and, suspenseful and mysterious film. This is similar to various films such as 'The orphan' and The Hitcher'.
