About library• Very small room with few books for

Dutch, French, English and German. Language teachers have books in their classroom.

• Our students go to libraries in their municipality, they are encouraged to do so. Most municipalities have big libraries.

• All of our computers are on Internet. In different class rooms they can use them as well.

• Education: in France, you have to pass a special exam, in fact a contest, to be a teacher at master level (don't matter the specialty of this master)

• Working hours: 30 hours in the college, 6 hours outside (meeting, preparation...)

• the situation of librarian in France is a bit special because we are teachers, but we have to work double of time (36 hours, teachers are working at school only 18 hours), we have no teaching program but we have to  transfer skills and knowledge... Uncomfortable, not meat, not fish as we are telling in french

• Working hours:  8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

• Projects: Fund raising for the library, which has no specific funds. I have just been made librarian this year and my first job was to sort out through all the library books, many of which were very old and torn. I have bought many new books to give life again to the library and make students interested in reading. Many of the new books I have bought were books recommended by the students themselves.

Page 163: European school libraries

Apart from books, in the library I have also introduced a number of board games, like Monopoly Junior (which helps with addition and subtraction) and educational games. These games are popular with all types of students and has helped make the library a welcoming place for students.

I held the second activity which was titled “Eat a book, read a muffin”’ The library helpers (a group of about 15 students who have helped during their free time to reorganize the library) came up with this title. Basically, during break time, we sold muffins baked by the students themselves and at the same time we also took many new library books out to the school yard for students to borrow books at the same time. Each muffin had a name of a book inside it.

• Our library is quite small, children from the school club (age 6 - 10) sometimes spend afternoon there or older pupils can borrow books. Most of the books were given by parents or teachers as donors, but part were also bought as new ones.

• In our town is quite big regional library that´s why school libraries are not considered as  the top priorities for schools (the are 7 primary schools in our town), because  that regional library organizes various events (or competitions) for pupils.

Right now, our library is under construction. We are on our way to build a new "Centre for documentation and information". We will change one thing: no wall at all in the main room, to have a bigger space. We will then add a place with pillows to be able to read and finally the shelves won't be straight, they will be like waves.
