Eugénio de Castro

Eugénio de Castro was born on 4th March 1869, in Coimbra.

His main occupation was writing. He was a poet and a dramatic author.

He was also a professor at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Coimbra.

As a poet he used new rhymes, metrics (Alexandrine verses) and richer vocabulary. He also wrote about Ancient classics.

Eugénio de Castro

By 1889 he graduated in Arts from the University of Coimbra, where he later became a teacher.

He also started the magazine “The Unruly“ along with João Menezes Bastos Francisco, during the last year of their degree in 1889. He wrote for the magazine he had founded as well as for "New Bohemia", both followers of French Symbolism.

In 1890, Eugénio de Castro published the book of poems "Oaristos“, a milestone in Symbolism in Portugal.

During his second phase, the neoclassical one – which corresponds to the poems written in the 20th century –, he was inspired both by Classical Antiquity and the Portuguese past. This revealed a certain nostalgia, which was typical of the first decades of the 20th century in Portugal.

Our school was named after him.
