HANNUKKAH, also know as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday

commemorating the rededication of the Holy

Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of

the 2nd century BCE, Hanuk-kah is observed for eight

nights, starting on the 25th day of KISLEV according to the Hebrew

Calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the

Gregorian Calendar.

The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a very special candelabrum, the nine-branched Menorah or Hanukiah. An extra light called a shamash is also lit each night for the purpose of lighting the others, and is given a distinct location, usually above or bellow the

rest. The “shamash” symbolically supplies light that may be used for some secular purpose.

3. In the middle of construction pa-per, line up your paint covered hands side by side, with your

thumbs touching. Gently and firmly press hands onto the paper.

4. Dip your index (pointer) finger in paint. Place your finger above your thumbprints to make the middle, highest candle, called a shamos.

5. Wahs or wipe your hands thor-oughly. Put a finger into yellow, white, and/or red paint. Press on

top of each candle to create flames.

Celebrate the Festival of Lights by making a menorah with your very own

handprints!

1. Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated with the lighting of one candle in a menorah each night for

8 nights. A tall candle, called the Shamos is usted to light the smaller

candles.

2. Spread newspaper over your work area. Pour Crayola washable finger paint into foam produce trays. Dip

both hands, with fingers slightly spread, into the paint.
