REPORTED SPEECH

DIRECT TO INDIRECT:

A person’s speech can be reported in two ways:-

1. Direct Speech: by quoting the actual words of the speaker in the inverted commas. Example: Rishi said, “I cannot dance.”

2. Indirect speech: here the meaning of the meaning of the sentence is conveyed without using actual words.Example: Rishi said that he could not dance.

Things to remember about Direct Speech

It is to be placed in inverted commas. The sentence is separated by a comma from the reporting

verb. It begins with the capital letter.

Page 22: English work book

not used. After the reporting verb we use conjunctions like if, that, if

necessary. The tense of reporting verb is not to be changed. Pronouns which are used to show the position are changed

in the Indirect Speech.

The words which are used for expressing nearness are changed into words expressing distance:

Here - There

This - That

These - Those

Now - Then

Today - That day

Tonight - That night

Yesterday - The previous day

Tomorrow - The next day

Next day - The following day

Thus - So

Page 23: English work book
