Paragraph 1: Introduction
Sketching is something that everyone can do even if you don’t have a hand. A
sketch is basically to hastily draw or paint something without all the details.
Sketching plays an important role in my course as I am taking architecture for my
degree program. This essay will be about how to produce an attractive sketch on a
specific type of kitchen utensil that I have chosen.
Paragraph 2: Kitchen utensil
I chose a butcher knife or as some would say a meat cleaver as my kitchen utensil
to sketch. The reason I chose a meat cleaver is because I use it quite often when I
prepare my meals. For example I use it to tenderise and chop any kind of meat. The
meat cleaver is also my kitchen utensil of choice because it is one of the more
simple utensils to sketch. At first glance the meat cleaver looks very shiny as it is
made out of stainless steel. It has a gold coated handle with a little wood in the
centre. Besides that, it also has some Japanese words engraved on the surface of
the knife. There is nothing special about the edge of the meat cleaver besides it
being very sharp. The meat cleaver is quite heavy and when I hold it in my hands It
has a very cold feeling to it as the handle is made of metal.
Paragraph 3: Tools
The tools that was use during the process of my sketch is very minimal as I only
required to use only one 2B pencil, a HB pencil, a few piece of A4 paper and a
eraser. Before I started my sketch, I cleared my work table in my room so that I
would not divert my attention to the other objects on my table when I am sketching.
The other more reasons that I cleared my table is so that no other objects will be
obstructing me when I am sketching. Furthermore, lighting is also an important factor
as to produce an attractive sketch. Because of that, I had turn on all the lights in my
room for me to be able to see clearly of the object that I was sketching.
Paragraph 4: Process
As I am not very familiar on how to sketch, I have consulted my father in order to
teach me the different ways to produce a sketch. The first step was to draw the basic
shape of the meat cleaver. After I had drawn the basic shape, I started to add some
texture to the sketch by shading and contouring it at right places with different grades
of B pencils to contour and produce a dimensional and perspective effect. H pencils
are used to produce temporary lines while rough sketching. It is a lighter shade
compared to B pencils thus it is preferable by many as it is easier to differentiate the
main lines and can be erased after. After I have done all that, I put in the final touch
which is to draw the Japanese words that was engraved on the knife on to my
sketch.
Paragraph 5: Conclusion
It was a long and painful process for me to sketch because I am not very good at it
and it took me about an hour for me to sketch something as basic as my kitchen
utensil the meat cleaver. I am quite proud of my own sketch as it looks somewhat
decent. I am also happy that my sketch did not turn out to look like a 3 year old had
drawn it. I am looking forward to the next time that I am required to produce a sketch
as I get to improve my drawing technique and the quality of my drawing.
