Contrast Essay What is a movie genre? A movie genre is a specific type of method of categorising different types of film based on their plot line, style, setting, and characters. There are many types of movie genre, for example will be like action, horror, fantasy and many more. Some movies not only have one but multiple genres overlapping with each other in a single movie. The movies that I have chosen are The Day After Tomorrow for disaster and Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade for adventure. The reason I chose these two movies is because they are my favourite movies to watch. I will be talking about the differences between the two movies in terms of their genre, main plot, characters and their ending. Firstly, the genre for the movie The Day After Tomorrow is disaster and it is directed by Roland Emmerich. An example for another famous disaster movie will be 2012 which has roughly the same story line as the movie that I have chosen. The next movie is an adventure film which is Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade directed by Steven Spielberg. The biggest difference about the two genre is one portrays what will happen when a disaster were to strike earth and the other one portrays someone or sometimes a group of people going on an unusual, exciting and sometimes hazardous journey to an unknown place to achieve a sort of goal. Next will be what are the differences in the main plot of the two movies. In The Day After Tomorrow, a scientist named Jack Hall had discovered that the earth is drastically cooling down due the global warming and this drastic cooling of the earth is going to lead to another major ice age that could wipe humanity out from the face of earth. On the other hand, the movie Indiana Jones is about the journey of Indiana Jones in finding his father which has been kidnaped by the Nazis while he was looking for the ancient artefact called The Holy Grail which has been said to be able to make an individual immortal by drinking from it. After that will be what are the differences in the characters between the two movies. The main protagonist in The Day After Tomorrow is the scientist Jack Hall played by Dennis Quaid and his son Sam Hall played by Jake Gyllenhaal, both them have the same characteristics which is they will never give up and will never lose hope. An example will be that Sam is stuck in a library in new york city with little to no resource to survive but he still do his best and also protect those that is around him while his father Jack is walking to New York City from Washington in order to save his son even when some other people advised him that is impossible to do it. In Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, the main characters Indiana Jones played by Harrison Ford and his father Henry Jones played by Sean Connery have a very strong moral code as seen in the scene where Indiana Jones fight to get back an artefact which has been dug up by a team of treasure hunters and argues with them that it belongs in a museum. In another scene where Henry Jones said the reason of mailing his diary which contains all his research on the Holy Grail artefact to his son is to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands which is the Nazis. Lastly will be the ending of the two movies. The ending of The Day After Tomorrow is a little on the mixed feeling side while Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade had a more happy ending. The reason I said the movie The Day After Tomorrow had a mixed feeling is because it is both happy and sad at the same time. While Jack Hall was able to reunite and rescue his son in New York, he had to make some sacrifice along the way as he could not rescue his friends from dropping into a mall due to the glass roof of the mall cracked and shattered under pressure. The happy ending in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was that Indiana Jones was able to defeat the Nazis on their goal of retrieving the Holy Grail. At the same time, he also manage to save his father from dying due to being shot at by the commanding Nazi officer which also perished in the end of the movie by choosing and using the wrong Holy Grail. In conclusion, I manage to spot the contrast between the two movies and at the same time learn something from them as well. I learned that we must persevere during hard times from the movie The Day After Tomorrow and to always do the right thing in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. These lessons that I learned from the two movies will take me a long way and help me in anything that I do now and in the future.
