What is EndNote

• EndNote is a commercial Reference Management Software package, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing Essays and Articles. It is produced by Thomson Reuters.

• We will use “EndNote X6 version” in this course.

Getting Started with EndNote

• Create your own library

• Method: Open EndNote > Create New Library > Give a specific Name > Save.

• In an existing Library, Go to File > New > Give a specific Name > Save.

• A new blank library will automatically appear.

Direct Export From Databases

• Several databases have an option to export references directly to EndNote. These include:

• Google Scholar

• Science Direct

• PubMed (Use Firefox)

• Business Source Complete

• Compendex

• IEEE Xplore

• JSTOR

• The Web of Knowledge

• Scopus

Direct Export From

Google Scholar

• 1st Method

• Go to Search > Cite > Import into EndNote > Citation will be downloaded > double click on citation. It will be automatically imported in your already “Opened Library”

• 2nd Method

• Go to Settings > Bibliography Manager > Show links to import citations into > EndNote > Save.

• These settings will be saved for downloading citations.

Direct Export From

Science Direct

• Method

• Search > Export Citations > In Format > Select “ RIS (for EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite)” > In Content select “Citations Only” > Click on “Export”.

• Citation will be downloaded, then double click on citation to import into your library.

Direct Export From

PubMed• Browser Requirement, “FireFox”

• You can import citations “One by One” or “All Citations” of an author appeared on the page.

• Method: Search(e.g Muhammad Rashid Khan) > Send to > Select “Citation Manager” > click on “Create File” > Open with(Default).

• Same method is used for one citation.

• Google Chrome will directly download the file

Importing References From

A PDF Document • If you want to add the citation of a “PDF

Document” that you have saved on your computer EndNote may be able to grab the relevant data and add it to your EndNote library.

• Method A: Go to File > Import > Files(Select PDF file) > Import.

• It should be noted that this does not work well for all PDF documents.

• Method B: Copy the paper title in “Search Engine” and download its citation. Then import it in your library

Entering References

Manually

• When you cannot find a reference in an electronic format, enter it manually.

• Always type author’s names as shown. e.g WasimAhmad, write it as “Ahmad, W.”, Muhammad Rashid Khan, write it as “Khan, M. R.”.

• Names NOT already in your library appear in red.

• NEVER type anything in BOLD OR ITALICS.

• Specify the format e.g article, book, report etc.

• Do not forget to save the reference.

Managing Your References

In Endnote

Sorting Your References

• You can manage your references by Author’s Name, Year, Title, Journal Name and Reference Type.

• Method: Click on any column heading to sort the references, for example by ”Author”.

Searching Your Endnote Library

• This is very easily done either by entering a keyword or author into the search box on the toolbar or by selecting Search Library from the Tools menu.

Search Box

Editing References

• Individual references can be edited in the Reference preview panel on the right or by double clicking on a reference in the main panel. This will allow you to click on individual fields and make amendments or additions.

• You can check spelling when you have a reference open for editing.

• Method: Tools > Spell Check.

• Do not forget to save the reference.

Checking For Duplicates

• You can check and delete any duplicates in your EndNote library

• Method: References > Find Duplicates > Keep one of the Records.

Creating Groups Within Your

Endnote Library • It is better that you work with only one EndNote

library. But within that library it is possible to separate and organize your references into GROUPS.

• This is useful if you are working on more than one projects.

• Method: Groups > Create Group > Name it.

• You can add references to the groups as shown

• Method: Select references > drag to the group.

OR… Right click > Add references to (e.g Thesis)

Sorted References

• All References contains a list where every reference you have captured.

• Unfiled contains all the references that you have not yet added to a group.

• Groups contains all the references that you have added to the group.

• Trash contains no of references which are incomplete or wrong.

• MS Word.docx contains no of references which have been imported into this document from this library
