What are enclitics ?

-Enclitics in modern Greek are called some one-syllable words.

-These small words just lose their accent / word stress, or that word stress moves back to the last syllable of the preceding word.

Example 1μίλα του [míla tu]= talk to him

the enclitic "του" simply loses the word stress. The previous word does not

take a double word stress

the word "mu" throws the accent ( and word stress) back to the last

syllable of the word δáskalos. There is a double stress

When does the previous word take the accent/ word stress of an enclitic?

-The previous word takes the accent of an enclitic when it is stressed to the antepenultimate syllable. δά-σκα-λος, με-γα-λύ-τε-ρος , ά-κου-σε, α-νώ-τε-ρος, α-κού-μπη-σε.

Ο δάσκαλός μου [o δáskalós mu]= my

When does the previous word take the accent/ word stress of an enclitic?

-When there are two enclitics after a word which is stressed to the penultimate syllable, the stress of the last enclitic moves to the previous one.

Δώσε μού το [δóse mú to]= give it to me

Φέρε μού το [fére mú to] = bring it to me
