A) EMPORDÀ MARSHES NATURAL PARK

It is one of the most well-known natural areas in Catalonia in the Empordà region. This is a wetland area between the rivers Muga and Fluvià that is home to over 300 bird species and countless indigenous flora. It was created in 1983 following a long campaign to stop a development project that would have turned the area into a residential marina. The park is very popular with ornithologists, specially during the seasons when exotic birds like flamingos stop off here on their migration routes.

B) THE RUINS OF EMPÚRIES This is one of the most important archaeological sites in Catalonia, and thousands of visitors flock to the site every year to discover how Catalonia’s Greek and Roman ancestors lived in the Greek city of Emporion (market) and the subsequent Roman city Emporiae. The first Greek settlement was established towards 600 BC on a small rocky island known formely as Palaiapolis (old city) which is now joined to the mainland.The Roman city grew from a military camp set up by Scipio in 219 BC.Visitors can wander through the extensive ruins, which include remains such as the old city wall and a sanctuary dedicated to Asklepion, the Greek god of medicine. Inside the museum there’s a permanent display of mosaics, domestic implements and amphorae that have been discovered on the site.Since Empúries was the first Greek settlement on the Iberian peninsula, it was here that the Olympic torch was handed over prior to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
