DESCRIPTION

Slide deck from my keynote presentation at the Global Fashion Conference in Madrid, November 15, 2012. DEED: Development through Empowerment, Entrepreneurship, and Design is a research initiative at The New School that brings together students and faculty from design, management, and development. Faculty prepare teams of students on campus for international fieldwork during which they collaborate with artisans in emerging economies and local professional designers to support sustainable income-generating opportunities through craft-based services or products. This presentation will use examples from DEED's collaborations to discuss how design can be used as a vehicle for development, and how the empowerment of both the artisans as well as the university's students, are key to its successes.

“Through dialogue, the teacher-of-the-students and the students-of-the-teacher cease to exist and a new term emerges: teacher-student with students-teachers. The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is him/herself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach. They become jointly responsible for a process in which all grow.”
