Assignment 3.1

Introduction

There are a few exceptions for the use of copyrighted material and educational uses is

one of these exceptions. The Fair Use Law and Teach Act all educational institutions and

teachers to use copyrighted material to help teach students. However, there are guidelines

that must be followed and the following presentation outlines a few of these

guidelines.

Guideline 1

The use of copyrighted material must be part of instructional activities.

Example for Guideline 1

A teacher may photo copy an article from a science journal one must purchase or

subscribe to for students to read and discuss for learning purposes.

Guideline 2

The quantity of copyrighted work incorporated into the created work must be of a reasonable

amount and low percentage.

Example of Guideline 2

A teacher may copy a question from a textbook and include it into a test; however there

becomes and issue when a teacher photo copies every page of a textbook chapter and give it to students instead of purchasing the

text.

Guideline 3

Educational institutes must implement some technological measures to ensure compliance

with copyrighted work beyond merely assigning a password.

For instance, they must include user and location authentication through Internet Protocol (IP) checking, content timeouts,

print-disabling, cut and paste disabling, etc.

Example of Guideline 3

For instance, our Kodiak program not only includes a username and password, but the program also logs user out after periods of idleness, so that only certain people have

access to the materials in the program.

ConclusionSo students have the opportunity to access to a variety of

sources, educators have the right to use copyrighted material. However, to be sure educators are using these materials

correctly, there are a set of guidelines and rules that teachers must follow. These guidelines are part of the Fair Use and

Teach Act laws.
