Rotations and Blogging

• Each week we would go on rotations to different areas of the hospital.

• After each rotation would write in a blog and then responded to what others thought about their rotations.

• I liked blogging because we got feedback and got to see what other classmates thought.

PICU Week 2

• My second week rotation was spent in the PICU. It was pretty difficult being there because there was a child abuse case and it was hard to see how someone could do so much damage to a helpless child. Since he had so much brain damage, he would have seizures and wasn’t doing to good. The nurses said that he was going to make it, but seeing a little baby in that much pain was a difficult experience. Besides the little boy, there wasn’t really much going on. I mainly just looked through the charts and watched the nurse work on the baby.

Respiratory Week 4

• I spent week 4 in respiratory. On the first day I went with Candace and she was assigned the floor position, so nothing too exciting happened, but she was really nice. On the second day I went with monica and she was assigned the ER and also had to take care of those who were in surgery recovery. That was much more exciting because we got to go to the ICU and many other interesting places. While going around the hospital i got to experience how hard the RTs work. They are a very important addition to the hospital and do a little of everything.

Rehab Week 6

• I spent my week 6 rotation in Rehab. On the first day I went to the wrong hospital but it was still fun because I got to go around the hospital and got some more hands on experience. On the Second day i went to the RIGHT hospital and it was still fun because I got to play around with some molding plastic that they use to make braces and I got to make some of my own. It was also really interesting to see all of the different therapeutic things they use in physical therapy.

Labor and Delivery Week 8

• I was extremely excited for this rotation because I've always been interested in OB and really wanted to see a baby born. The first day was a little bit of a disappointment because there were no births and the only one that was active wouldn't let a student observe. The second day was much better because I got to see a cesarean and it was really interesting and fun to watch. The only problem with this unit is getting the mothers to let a student observe because there are a lot of people who don't like that kind of thing. Overall, I think anyone who hasn't been here yet will like it a lot! I sure did.

Laboratory Week 13

• This week I was in the Laboratory. The first day I walked around the hospital, with Mrs. Felts, and collected blood and other samples for the lab. It was actually pretty fun and watching her collect blood so many time made me want to try! Even though i couldn't =[ The second day was a little slower but still very interesting. I spent the day in the lab while some of the lab techs explained all  of the different machines and what they were used for. It was cool because I got to see one of them perform a test and I also got to look into the microscope.

Dear CICU Staff,

I wish to thank you for allowing me to shadow in the unit. It was my first time in a intensive care unit and it was very interesting to me. The steps used to care of the patients was very interesting and I loved learning about the different kind of drugs. IThank you for explaining things to me and answering the questions I had. My time in the CICU increased my understanding of medical terminology which I hope will help me in the future.

Your help in the CICU rotation has increased my interest in medicine. Thank you for allowing me to shadow you and thank you for helping me to understand more about medicine and the procedures you were performing.

Sincerely,

Jordyn Goseland, SGCHA

Dear St. Francis Laboratory Staff,

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to shadow in your unit. My time in the Laboratory and following phlebotomists helped me understand medical terminology. Hearing the words used is one of the ways that can help me better understand how to use certain medical terms. Thank you for explaining things clearly to me and asking if I understood.

I appreciate being allowed to see what working in the Laboratory is like. It was very interesting. People do not normally think of what work needs to be done to assist doctors in diagnosing patients. Thank you once again to all the staff for your help. I enjoyed my time spent in your unit and I appreciate you allowing me to be there.

Sincerely,

Jordyn Goseland, SGCHA

Dear St. Francis O.R. Staff,

I want to thank you for allowing me to witness surgeries and to shadow various physicians in the operating room. It showed me what a surgeon’s day can be like. The surgeries were interesting and the majority were procedures I had never had an opportunity to see before. I would like to thank everyone in the O.R. for being helpful and explaining different things to me. I appreciate that people would take time to explain what was going on.

Your help on the O.R. rotation has increased my interest in medicine. My interest in medicine remains strong after the surgeries. Thanks for allowing me to shadow and thanks for helping me to understand more about the operations that were preformed. Thank you very much for the opportunity.

Sincerely,

Jordyn Goseland, SGCHA

Mentor Forms

• Each week, while on rotation, we had to get mentor forms signed.

• I think they were significant because it allowed us to see what we were doing and how we were acting while on rotation.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am pursuing a career in Obstetrics so that I can better educate myself in the field. Enclosed is my resume for you to view.My knowledge in the health care field is exceptional and being accepted into the St. Gianna Catholic Health Academy has allowed me gain even more knowledge and an understanding of the health field. I have been able to observe patients, nurses, and doctors while they work. I have viewed a cesarean section, burn victims, and much more. As a student in the health academy, I was held to the same standard as the others around me. I was to act as professionally as if I worked there myself. In addition to this I am a very mature young woman and I know what I want to do in life. I am respectable and extremely reliable and I feel as if I would be an asset to your staff and I would appreciate your time.

Best Regards, Jordyn Goseland

Hand washing presentations

• We were put in groups of five, had to come up with a name, and eventually come up with a skit that would teach elementary children about hand washing.

Page 29: Electronic%20 portfolio%20jordyn[1]

• We went from classroom to classroom showing children the proper technique when washing your hands.

• The kids really loved the black light that showed “germs” on their hands.

Page 30: Electronic%20 portfolio%20jordyn[1]

Dr. Singh series

• Each Friday we would travel to Newman University to hear the lectures set up by Dr. Singh

• After each lecture we had to come up with a summary about what the speaker said and talked about.

Page 31: Electronic%20 portfolio%20jordyn[1]

Dr. Singh

• Our first lecture at Newman was given by Dr. Singh. He first gave us the syllabus and the explained what to expect in his class. Each class there will be speakers from different health and/or science professions. The information given is supposed to help us in different job titles and to help us decide what we want to do in life. As Dr. Sing said “why not make the first choice, the right choice”.I look forward to learning about all of the different health and science professions out there. A good piece of advice that I took into account was when Dr. Singh told us that those that have a desire to succeed, will succeed. People who go into a profession that they love have the desire to do their best and to be successful in what they do. This, I believe, helps them to continue to grow and learn more in their work environment.I am going into this class with the hope that I will find a specific career to pursue. I know that I will be going into nursing school after high school, but I don’t know what kind I want to do. Another Important piece of information was that you should not be looking for a job that is money based. Money does not help you enjoy your job, although its not bad, your interest in the job is the key. Dr. Singh enjoys his job as a teacher. I hope to one day be just as happy as he is in his career choice. I also wish to make the right choice and hope that I know exactly what I want to do in the future.

More at Newman

• We also got to visit the cadaver lab at the Newman campus.

• She told us what to look for and how to takes everything out.

• I thought the cadaver lab was really interesting, although the people looked weird.

Page 33: Electronic%20 portfolio%20jordyn[1]

In the end

• Although Health Academy was some work I really enjoyed it.

• I have learned more about what its like in the actual hospital and how things are handled in a real life situation.

• I have a bigger outlook on what I want to do and I can thank Health Academy for that.
