INTRODUCTION

An ETD (Electronic Thesis or Dissertation) is a digital document suitable for machine archives and worldwide access. It may incorporate such features as enhanced graphics, sound, and animation. In addition, ETDs enable users to perform comprehensive searches using words, phrases, or symbols.

ELECTRONIC THESIS & DISSERTATIONS (ETDS):

An ETD is a document that explains the research or

scholarship of a research scholar in an electronic format. It is simultaneously suitable for machine archives and

worldwide retrieval. The ETD is similar to its paper predecessor. For example, it has figures, tables, footnotes, and

references, a title page with the author's name, the official name of the university, the degree sought, and the names of the committee members.

Furthermore, it may describe why the work was done, how the research relates to previous work as recorded in the literature, the research methods used, the results, and the interpretation and discussion of the results, and a summary with conclusions.

The ETD is different from its paper predecessor, however, in a few important aspects.

HOW TO ACCESS ETDS World Wide Web Access to the ETD Collection is available via the World Wide Web through the ETD website, so people

can link to BYU's collection for browsing.

Library CatalogAll ETDs will appear in the Library Catalog. People searching the library catalog can easily search theses or dissertations by subject and then link directly to them from the search results.

Search EnginesGoogle or a similar search engine can be used to locate topics in submitted ETDs.

NDLTDAnyone seeking a specific ETD can search the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) at www.ndltd.org. NDLTD is a federation of member universities and consortia dedicated to improving Research education and the sharing of knowledge, helping universities build their information infrastructure, and extending the value of digital libraries.

THE BENEFITS OF ETDS Theses and dissertations provide tangible evidence of the scholarly development of students and

their ability to effectively communicate research findings. ETDs enable Research tudents to effectively and creatively present their research. Some of the specific benefits of the electronic submission and archiving of theses and dissertations include:

AvailabilityResearch presented in theses or dissertations is accessible to scholars all over the world via the World Wide Web. Potential employers may also more easily view these documents.

Multimedia IntegrationThe message of a thesis or dissertation may be better conveyed in an electronic document as opposed to a paper document. Creative possibilities are expanded by integrating color diagrams, color images, hypertext links, audio, video, animation, spreadsheets, databases, simulations, etc. into the document.

Digital Research SkillsBy preparing a thesis or dissertation and submitting it electronically, one can learn about electronic document preparation and digital libraries. These skills can help prepare for future roles in the information age, whether in teaching, conducting research, or using the research results of others.

Improves Library ServiceElectronic submissions allow the University to fulfill its responsibilities of recording and archiving theses and dissertations more economically. This is a key responsibility of the University library and is easier and less costly when the work flow involves electronic documents. ETDs reduce the need for library storage space and advance digital library technology, thus, improving library services.

AVAILABILITY BENEFITS

The world of scholarship depends on researchers making their work available to others. When research is available electronically, more people have access at a lower cost and more knowledge transfer occurs, which in turn stimulates education and research. It can also ensure that more people give credit to student authors for their work and that their research is cited in other publications, thus adding to the student's prestige and helping his or her future advancement.

Electronic access greatly increases the number of times works are viewed and read. Students who spent a great deal of time on their research should be encouraged to know that others are consulting it. This may guide and save others the time of redoing a study.

Constant analoge copying of the original increases the speed of materials deterioration

Reproduction is the better option
