The 1/3rd, 1/3rd, 1/3rd System

0The system is widely used by high schools across the state

0Also used by the MASC/MAHS for the State Board of Delegates

0Point system0One third of points come from written application0One third of points come from interview0One third of points come from student vote0 Idea is take away from popularity contest stigma

Written Application

0 Interested students are given an application0Application asks basic questions such as any job

application or our standing application0May be a good idea to hide the identity of the

applicant0Advisor and Elections Committee score application0Would need a strict rubric for this0Score accounts for 33.3333% of the final tally

Page 4: Elections Process Luke

Interview Process

0All applicants who have completed phase one are scheduled to be interviewed

0 Interview must be very different from application as not to overlap points

0Questions might reflect personality, work ethic and desire to be in Student Government

0Who does interviewing is a gray area0Again, a strict rubric will have to be made0Points are tallied and account for 33.3333% of score

Election Process

0Students who have completed this process then are put on the ballot to be elected

0Votes earned are converted to into points on the same scale as the other two, worth 33.333% of total score

0Problem is that elections still receive little turnout

Page 6: Elections Process Luke

Challenges

0What questions will be asked on the application0What questions will be asked in the interview0How can both of these be scored fairly0Who will serve on the application scoring committee

and who will conduct and grade the interview0How can voting turnout be increased and leveled0How can we lure enough applicants to create

competition0How do we lure “quality” applications

Page 7: Elections Process Luke

Benefits to System

0Equality0Select best possible candidate0Gather input from student body, student government

and advisor0Weeds out “weak” contests normally elected with

single ballot system0More performance based
