SAM: WHY I WANT TO BE YOUR NEXT COUNCILLOR

I had never given any
thought to standing as a
Councillor until last summer,
when I began to see the
commitment of the
Conservative Party to
localism. The principle of
rolling back the state and
transferring powers to local
communities is one that I
find very exciting and I want
to be a part of making that
happen in Calderdale. If I am
elected as your local
Councillor I will work to three
principle aims:
Firstly, and most directly, I
will be available to help with
any specific issue that you
might have with any element
of Council service.
Secondly, I will help any
group or community
organisation to make the
most of the opportunities
being presented by the
Coalition Government’s
localism agenda. These
opportunities include taking
responsibilities for Council
services or buildings, or
producing a neighbourhood
plan for inclusion within the
Local Development
Framework.
Thirdly, I will work with
colleagues on the
Conservative Group to
transform the Council into
the organisation that we the
public want it to be. In the
same way that local powers
are being transferred to
communities, so powers are
being transferred from
Whitehall to local authorities.
I want to see Calderdale
Council seizing these powers
with both arms and then
using them to serve
residents in a more open,
creative and innovative way.

YOUR PRIORITIES ARE MY PRIORITIES
1 Services. I will ensure that Council-run services in the area are protected as far as
possible.
2 Local Centres. I want to support the vibrancy of the local centres at West Vale,
Greetland and Stainland.
3 Public Transport. I will look to maintain and enhance transport services, especially in
the more rural areas.
4 Affordable Housing. I want to work with the Council to deliver affordable homes for
first-time buyers.
5 Enterprise. I will support the creation of employment-generating activities across the
area. Sam Stafford in Shaw Park

LABOUR’S DEVASTATING LEGACY The last Labour Government brought our Country to the brink of bankruptcy. They doubled the national debt and left us with the biggest budget deficit in our peacetime history. Just to pay the interest is costing £2 per day for every man, woman and child in the UK - that is over £400,000 per day from Calderdale tax payers!
CONSERVATIVES IN GOVERNMENT
PROTECTING THE VULNERABLE WHILST TACKLING THE DEBT
“and we are taking over 1 million of the lowest paid
out of Income Tax”
CONSERVATIVES IN COUNCIL
2.5% Council Tax rise 2008/9
1.87% Council tax rise 2009/10

And thanks to David Cameron:
No change in 2011/12
When leading the Council the Conservatives were able to
trim the Council’s budget whilst investing in the area of
Calderdale. New leisure centres have been opened in
Brighouse and Sowerby Bridge, Calderdale now recycles
42% of its household rubbish, a £2.5m Economic Fighting
Fund was created to support business, investment was
put into the Shay Stadium, refurbishment of Children’s
Play Areas and 3 new libraries opened with many more
refurbished.
LIB DEMS AND LABOUR ATTACK SERVICES
Given a choice between supporting local people or their
union paymasters Labour opted for the unions and the
Lib Dems agreed!
