PRESCHOOL EDUCATION
Age: 0-6 years old
Kind of education: voluntary (from 0 to 3 years)
Consists of two parts: from 0 to 3 years old, and from 3 to 6.
The aim of this educational stage is favour children’s physical
and personal development, and to compensate the inequalities
existing among them.
PRIMARY EDUCATION
Age: 6-12 years old Kind of education: compulsoryDuration: six academic years, divided in three stages of two years each one.
Free of charge in publicly funded schools.Schools open 5 days a week, 25 hours daily, 180 days in a year.Maximum size class is 25 pupils.
• Knowledge of the Environment.• Art Education.• Physical Education.• Spanish Language.• The other official Language of the
Autonomus Community. (if there is another official language)
• Foreign Language.• Mathematics.• Religion (voluntary for the pupils).
SECONDARY SCHOOL
Age: 12-16 years old
Kind of education: compulsory
Duration: four academic years, divided in two stages of two
years each one.
When the pupil has satisfactorily finished the compulsory
education and got the Diploma, has two chances:
Access to the labour market
Increase the education through post-compulsory studies: High
School or professional training of medium level.
Students transfer automatically from primary to Lower Secondary Education.
Free of charge in publicly funded schools. Schools open 5 days a week, 30 hours a
week, 175 days in a year. Maximum size class is 30 pupils.
Social Studies, Geography and History. Plastic and Visual Education. Physical Education. Spanish Language and Literature The other official Language and
Literature of the Autonomous Community. Foreign Languages. Mathematics. Natural Sciences Religion (voluntary for the pupils).
HIGH SCHOOL
Age: 16-18 years old
Kind of education: voluntary
Duration: two academic years.
Organized into five different modalities: Arts, Sciences of Nature and
Health, Humanities, Social Sciences and Scientific and Technological.
High School should permit to acquire a human and intellectual maturity, as
well as enough knowledge and abilities in order to develop the different
social functions with responsibility and competency, giving access to the
pupil to the high professional training or university studies.
Bachillerato (general Upper Secundary Education).
Formación profesional Específica de grado medio (intermediate-level Specific Vocational training)
Age 16-18. Students must hold a certificate of secundary
education. No tiution fees in publicly funded
establishments, but parents pay for materials, transport or meals.
University Advanced-level Art Education
(Enseñanzas Artísticas de Grado Superior).
Advanced-level Specific Vocational Training (Formación Profesional Específica de Grado Superior).
Other very specific specialized institutions.
Four kinds of Bachillerato:Arts, Natural Sciencie and Health, Humanities and Social Studies.
Compulsory Subjects for all pupils: Spanish Language and Literature. Autonomus Community Language and Literature. History. Philosophy. Foreing Language. Physical education.
Vocational Training The vocational training is also a common
possibility after ESO or after the Spanish Baccalaureate.
There are two different types of programs: Middle Grade Training Cycles (Ciclos
Formativos de Grado Medio), which have the ESO diploma as a requirement.
Superior-level Training Cycles (Ciclos Formativos de Grado Superior), which have the Spanish Baccalaureate as the principal requirement.
The basic national guidelines are laid down by the Autonomus Communities Education Authorities..
Curriculum includes theorical and practical training organized on a modular basis.
Teaching methods should afford pupils a coordinated view of the productive processes.
• Provision and Costs• Schools in Spain can be divided into 3
categories:• State schools (Colegios Publicos) • Privately run schools funded by the State
(Colegios Concertados) • Purely private schools (Colegios Privados)
• State schools educated 67.4%, private but state funded schools 26.0%, and purely private schools 6.6% of pupils the preceding year.
• All non-university state education is free in Spain, but parents have to buy all of their children's books and materials (but not in Castilla-La Mancha).
