What are Rainforests?
2
Rainforests are characterized by
• Very high rainfall amounts
• Normally between 68-78 inches
3
Did you know?
4
There are two types
Tropical
5
And ….
Temperate
6
Tropical Rainforests are found in the tropics near the equator.
7
Temperate Rainforests are found in temperate regions between the tropics
and polar circles.
8
Did you know?
9
That 45-70% of Earth’s species are unique to rainforests.
10
And millions of plants, insects and microorganisms are still undiscovered
11
Did you know?
12
Rainforests are responsible for 28% of Earth’s oxygen turnover (process)

14
Rainforests have 4 main layers. Each layer has different plants and animals
adapted for life in that area.
15
The Emergent Layer contains a small number of very large trees, called emergents.
These trees must withstand hot temperatures and strong winds.
16
Eagles, butterflies, bats and monkeys live here.
17
The Canopy Layer contains the majority of the large trees. The canopy is home
to 50% of all plant species.
18
The fauna in this layer is similar to that in the emergent layer but more diverse.
A 1/4 of all insect species are believed to exsist in the canopy.
19
The Understory Layer or the shrub layer lies between the canopy and the forest floor.
Only 5% of sunlight shining on the rainforest reaches the understory.
20
The leaves in this level are much larger making a great home for insects. This layer is also home to birds, snakes, lizards, jaguars, boa constrictors and leopards to name a few.
21
The Forest Floor Layer is the bottom layer of the rainforest. There is little vegetation here
because it receives only 2% sunlight.

23
More than half of the world’s species of plants and animals are in the rainforest.
24
Rainforests support various types of species including mammals, reptiles, birds,
invertebrates. Fungi is also very common.

We use the Rainforest for• Timber
• Animal products (meat, hides)
• Tourism destinations
• Food
• Medicines (¼ of medicines have been discovered here)
27
But….Did you know?
28
We affect the RainforestHuman induced deforestation plays a significant
role in the future of the rainforest. Due to the heavy logging the rainforests are shrinking.
29
This causes many species to be driven to extinction. Biologists estimate extinction is
happening at a rate of 50,000/ year.

You can help save the Rainforest
• Recycle everything you can!• Use cold water when possible!
• Reuse grocery bags!• Store things in reusable containers!
• Don’t leave water running!• Put up birdfeeders!• Watch out for wildlife!
