• Ohio was the 17th nation admitted into the Union. It is the 34th largest state via land.
• The word “Ohio” is Iroquois for “great river.”• During the Civil War, Ohio gave the biggest
amount of Union soldiers to the effort. • One of the neatest thing about Ohio is that
eight presidents have been from here, giving it the nickname “Mother of Presidents.”
“Mother of Presidents”
• Alright class! This week will we be covering information on the Presidents who have come from Ohio. You live in this great state and need to learn about some of the things it has contributed. This interactive power point will give you a little background information to aid you in learning for this week. We will go into more detail on the Presidents over the next few days. It will end with a simple quiz to test you, so study up!
William Henry Harrison• Harrison was the 9th President and lived from
1773-1841. He was born in Virginia, but grew up in Ohio. When he was older, he became a soldier and even fought in early battles against the Tecumseh Indians. He became a war hero and used that as a platform to win the Presidency. Sadly, Harrison died of pneumonia within the first month in office
becoming the first President to die in power.
Ulysses S. Grant
• Grant was the 18th President and lived from
1822-1885. He attended West Point and
served in the Union during the Civil War. He
became a famous General which gave him
enough popularity to become President.
Later, he was diagnosed with throat cancer.
He spent his last years in a chair, in pain, only
to finish his memoir days before his death.
Rutherford B. Hayes• Hayes was the 19th President and lived from
1822-1893. He, like the previous Presidents,
was a successful General during the Civil War.
After being elected Ohio’s Governor three
times, he ran for President and won. He was
the first President to make a phone call from
the White House. He died from a heart attack
and his last words declared that he would be
where his beloved wife is.
James Abram Garfield
• The last President to be born in a log cabin,
Garfield was the 20th President and lived from
1831-1881. He was a Civil War General,
congressman, senator and college president
before becoming President of the U.S. He was
shot but died months later from complications
of the wounds, his last words were “My work
is done.”
Benjamin Harrison• Harrison was the 23rd President and lived from
1833-1901. He was a senator before becoming President. After his death, from a cold, he was kept alive on United Postal Service stamps. He appears on several more than other Presidents. Inauguration Day
William McKinley Jr.
• McKinley was the 25th President and lived
from 1843-1901. He was born to a poor
family and served in the Civil War. He was
elected Governor of Ohio twice and served as
a U.S. Congressman. He was the first

William Howard Taft• Taft was the 27 th President and lived from
1857-1930. Taft was our nations largest
President weighing over 300 pounds and
standing over six feet tall. He always wanted
to be a judge just like his father. After
becoming President, he was nominated to be
Chief Justice and remains the only man to be
President and a Justice.
Warren G. Harding• Harding was the 29th President and lived from
1865-1923. He was known as a handsome man and he said at one point that he didn’t even want to be President, but he was elected. He only lived three years in office before he died overnight in California on his
