Indication of the High Unemployment Rate

Increased rate of ship piracy from 35 cases to 97 cases in 2011 first 3 months (International Maritime Bureau)

29.000 children under 5 years old died due to famine (United Nations)

30% Somali inhabitant of 7.105.000 people (2011 estimation) having acute malnutrition (United Nations)

Life expectancy rate is only 46 years old (United Nations)

Inflation rate reached more than 100% on 2000 – 2005 (Embassy of the Rep. of Indonesia), graphic

Somalia is really dependant on another countries’ donations, especially United States of America and Italy (Wikipedia.com)

Production Capacity• Import values (US$ 576 millions) is

greater than export values (US$ 241 millions) (Embassy of the Rep. of Indonesia)

• International debt reached US$ 3 billions (2006) (Embassy of the Rep. of Indonesia)

• Drought caused some problems to the inhabitants’ occupations such as farms and ranches

• Some Somali women only works as household helper while the men remained unemployed

Somalia until now have not been able to resolve their economic problem on a macro level.This is indicated by: 1. The unemployment rate is high 2. High inflation rate 3. The production capacity that has not

been able to meet domestic needs so that Somalia is still classified as poor country

Drought in Somalia in recent years contributed worsen their condition
