Approaches to Childhood learning – Class activity Record Sheet
After every class Activity write into the record sheet. Add photos throughout the record. 15 records

Handprint Duck Craft
Materials used:
Brown acrylic paint, coloured feathers, coloured card, paper, stick on googly eyes, prit stick.
Time plan:
From start to finish including getting ready and cleaning up it would be about half an hour.
Room and/or equipment requirements: paper, scissors, desk, prit stick, plates for paint.
General Aim of activity – To make a duck out of a hand print using paint and other materials
Specific Learning outcomes of the activity – To use fine motor skills using the scissors and sticking on the
feathers, legs, beak and eyes. To show the children you can make things from different parts of your body.
Steps for making or doing activity:
1: get all of your supplies out and ready
2: cut out a head and legs for the duck with the coloured card
3: put the paint onto a plate or tray

4: place your hand into the paint
5: then place your hand onto a sheet of paper
6: stick the legs on the prit stick
7: and also the head
8: then finish it off with a beak, eyes and feathers.
How will the child/ren benefit from the activity?
They will benefit by learning about the different textures of the paint on their hands and the feel of the
feathers. They can improve their motor skills by cutting out the shapes and sticking them on in the
correct places. They also have fun and learn that by using your hand you can make other things than just
your handprint like animals and other things.
Age group/s: this age group would be for 3 to 4 year olds as they may have to use scissors with the aid of
an adult.
How would you make the activity more inclusive? You could do it on the ground in groups. You could
have the children doing all the different steps of this activity, for example one cutting things out, one
doing the hand prints one glue things on etc.
How would you adapt the activity to suit outside/inside?
You could do it outside on a wall or on some timber, you could also use the materials used outside eg.
Feathers or leaves.
Simplify this activity:
Instead of cutting out the shapes for the head and legs you could get the children to draw them. Overall I
think this activity is pretty simple to do anyway.
Variations for the activity: How could you vary the activity?
You could make different animals out of it
Or just use paint with no other materials

When using the scissors the could cut themselves. So an adult may need to help.
Could the activity link to an external activity/group/ outing?
Yes they could learn about animals for a visit to the farm or pond and see the ducks that they have made
in class
Extensions for the activity: The children could learn about animals and different shapes of animals. They could learn about the
environment and the other creature on the planet.
Interactions with children: talk about.
You could ask them if they ever went feeding the ducks in the river. Or ask them how the different
textures feel of the paint and feathers on their hands.
Problem solving element? "Why isn't the paint coming out now?", "Why is the feathers stuck to your
fingers", "where do you think the eyes and legs go?"
Evaluation of activity: What did think of the activity?
I thought the activity went well. The people in my group seemed to be enjoying themselves and the
directions were easy to follow. It wasn’t too long so they didn’t get bored. And everyones duck turned out
really well and there were lots of varity on the colours shapes and sizes.
